March 16th

by Jimmy Hua on March 15th, 2022

On March 16th, 2021, six Asian women were murdered due to their race in the Atlanta spa shootings. The Asian community experienced a watershed moment that inspired the #StopAsianHate movement for the Asian Pacific Islander community. Many ERG leaders stepped up to support each other, their members, and their communities.

As we near the one year anniversary of the shootings, the Asian Leaders Alliance and Asian Justice Movement Coalition prepared this toolkit to enable our ERG leaders to support their members and facilitate activation of their company’s leadership.

March 16th Toolkit and Templates

This toolkit was put together by different members of the Asian Leaders Alliance and contributions by other DEI experts and Organizations. This is that perfect example of what exemplifies the ALA community. Different individuals reached out to see what each other was doing for March 16th and decided to put together a toolkit to equip and empower the whole community.

There are many events happening this week that are being shared by many organizations. Some we have listed below, but you will find the rest in the ALA Community Portal. To learn how to get access, visit our members’ page on our website. As with everything that ALA does, this is free and open to everyone! Everyone and all organizations can post and share their events. And everyone is welcome to share the events with their members, employees, friends, and family. Just think of it as the Eventbrite for the API community.

More than ever, we need to have a space and encourage each other to support, share, collaborate, and make collective impacts together!

We want to hear from you! And have a chance to win something yummy!

To help us foster collaboration across Asian Pacific Islander Employee Resource Groups (ERG) and civic organizations to spur positive, long-term, and inclusive community impact we are looking to you for feedback.

Please take this 5-minute survey from the Social Responsibility squad for a chance to win a case of Lunar Hard Seltzer.

Break The Silence: Justice for Asian Women Rally

Nationwide Events Mark One-Year Anniversary of
Atlanta Spa Shootings

Asian American organizations in 11 cities to encourage communities to “Break The Silence” — AAPI Community Organizes Rallies Across America on One Year Anniversary of Atlanta Spa Shootings

Organizers call for more support for survivors of hate crimes and awareness about on-going violence against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) women

According to research, one in five AAPIs Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders experienced a hate incident in the past year

Seventy-four percent (74%) of AAPI women in the U.S. report experiencing racism, discrimination over the past year

Asian American and Pacific Islander communities are coming together in Atlanta, New York City, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, New York City, Sacramento, San Francisco, the Twin Cities, and Washington, D.C. for a national moment to acknowledge the one year anniversary of the Atlanta spa shootings and uplifting the experience of Asian AAPI women.

During the pandemic and since the Atlanta Asian shootings on March 16, 2021, incidents and reporting of violence and hate crimes against Asian Americans have tragically continued to escalate. The Atlanta Asian shootings, and so many other recent incidents of Asian hate captured on video and rotating in the media, have shocked the nation. Rally organizers and others across the nation are speaking out and taking action together to vocally respond and demand action and change.

“We hope this never happens to another family,” said Randy Park, the son of Hyun Jung Kim who was killed last year at the Gold Spa. “It’s crushing to never see our mother again. Hate needs to stop. Let society not forget March 16. We certainly won’t.”

The goal of the event is to uplift the experiences of Asian women by acknowledging the complexities of their struggles, demanding change, and celebrating women’s strength. Conscious of the anniversary of the Atlanta shootings, and the one too many tragedies in over the last year, this event is meant to emphasize that the violence enacted on Asian women’s bodies does not solely define their identities and existence.

Ascend Forum to Stop Asian Hate

by Brian Pang on Mar 14, 2022

Last week, Ascend hosted the Global #AscendTogether Forum to #StopAsianHate: Hate Knows No Boundaries & Combating it Takes Steadfast Leadership. Our time together was filled with tears, emotions, reflections, and connections. Hundreds of participants from nearly 200 companies and organizations took part in this highly engaging Forum.

We thank and deeply appreciate our speakers and participants who candidly shared powerful personal stories and shared practical insights on how we can collectively combat hate. We also had an enlightening discussion on the importance of inter-Asian allyship and how to practice it, especially in the workplace. We paid tribute to the victims of anti-Asian hate crimes including six women who were murdered last year in Atlanta, GA on 3/16/2021. Two days from today, we will join our community and allies in marking the 1-year anniversary of the murders.

There is still so much to do together to raise awareness, challenge the model minority myth, stereotypes, and combat anti-Asian sentiments and hate. We need your help to amplify our efforts as we collectively drive workplace and societal impact by developing and elevating all Asian and Pacific Islander (API) business leaders and empowering them to become catalysts for change.

We hope you will continue to support Ascend, in particular, our Foundation initiatives including the 5-Point Action Agenda and the Impact Fund.

We look forward to seeing you at our future programs.

Right to Be (FKA HollaBack)

by Brian Pang on Mar 14, 2022

HOLLABACK! HAS CHANGED ITS NAME TO RIGHT TO BE.

We believe a world that respects our right to be isn’t some far-off destination. It’s something we’re building every day. This is your call to power, to build a world free of harassment. How do you want to get started?

WHAT WE DO

WE TURN THE CARE WE HAVE FOR EACH OTHER INTO SIMPLE, CREATIVE, AND EFFECTIVE ACTION.

Every day, we train hundreds of people to respond to, intervene in, and heal from harassment. We hold space for people experiencing harassment to share their stories for affirmation and support. And we prepare new leaders to create workplaces, schools, and communities around the world that are filled with humanity.

OUR GOAL BECAME BUILDING A WORLD, DAY BY DAY AND ACTION BY ACTION, WHERE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE…

…On the Street…Online…At Work…LGBTQIA+…Black…Asian…Latinx…Neurodiverse…Disabled…Muslim…Jewish…Healing…Evolving…And more.

Right To Be’s work ranges widely, but our goal is simple: we want to build a world where everyone has the Right To Be who they are, wherever they are. A world that’s free of harassment and filled with humanity.

UCA Youth Leadership Council is Recruiting Passionate and Independent Leaders

by UCA (United Chinese Americans) on Jan 26, 2022

We need your help!

To empower and prepare the younger generation of Chinese Americans for full participation and leadership in American life is one of the missions of UCA.

One of UCA youth programs is the UCA Youth Leadership Council, a youth leadership program. The Council, made up of those high school students in grades 10–12 and college students, aims to lead, connect and develop the next generation of Chinese Americans through networking, advocacy, and community building.

And it is much more than just an honorable position with a fancy title: working on the Council will improve Council members’ leadership skills, network with like-minded and aspiring peers, benefit from great mentors, increase their organizational experience, while at the same time accumulate required social service time.

This Council has three tasks in 2022: First, the Council is to build and provide a nationwide platform, grow youth network and provide consistent quality programming, with a focus on identity, leadership, cultural heritage, and other topics of interests to Chinese American youth.

Second, UCA will hold the first Chinese American Youth Convention in July this year. This convention will be an opportunity and platform for the younger generation to meet and communicate, build relationships, and show their projects, and share or obtain various information and resources. The Council will be tasked to prepare for the Convention.

Third, this summer will be the second year of UCA Summer University. Summer University is a summer program for qualifying high school students for leadership, identity, and heritage training. The Council members will play a leading role in supporting the Summer University.

To this end, we want to grow the Council. We are currently looking for high school and college students who are civic-minded, proud of their Chinese identity, and passionate about serving their community to join this Council with 22 openings. We hope that students with different skill sets can join the Council’s various committees. Among others, we need students with organizational and leadership skills, project management experience, computer and social media experience, and creative design abilities to join us. For the detailed description and requirements of these positions, please click the following link https://ucausa.org/uca-youth-leadership-council/ and submit the application.

We hope you will be able to recommend to us great young people you know who can work passionately and independently for the Chinese American youth community. Thanks!
