Last week Asian Leaders Alliance partnered with Gold House and the Asian Professionals Community Club on Clubhouse to offer a special movie screening of Minari to our communities and give this film a #GoldOpen! The trailer can be viewed here: https://a24films.com/films/minari

Minari is a movie about a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. Filmmaker, Lee Isaac Chung, is a son of Korean immigrants, who grew up on a small farm in rural Arkansas and then attended Yale University, majoring in Ecology. During his senior year, Chung dropped his plans for medical school and turned to filmmaking. Minari recently won the Golden Globe Award for the Best Foreign Language Film and is a potential Oscar contender!

Leadership from community organizations Asian Leaders Alliance and Asian Professionals collaborated with Gold House, the organization known for celebrating more Asian creators and filmmakers through their #GoldOpen initiative! This initiative has been supporting the recent emergence of Asian Representation in North American and Global theatres through their sell-out screenings of Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell, 2020 Oscar Winner Parasite and more!

Thanks to the GoldHouse partnerships, we were able to offer 100 complimentary tickets to members which we shared on a first-come, first served bases and were claimed quickly! Then for a four-hour window on March 5th, we had eager members viewing and talking about the film from all around the globe together.

While some of the popular films mentioned above dove into fantasy realms of the “Crazy and Rich” (which were certainly fun and entertaining!) Minari was relatable to many who have lived through the hardships and hopes of the immigrant pursuit of the American Dream. Throughout the film we see this family learn to fit in with society in a completely new, rural environment as they pursue their dreams. We also witness members of the family navigating relationships between generations and switching through the cultural lens of children, parents and the grandmother.

During the movie; those from ALA and Asian Professionals Community club in Clubhouse posted on social media with their thoughts and reactions to the film.

After the screening, Asian Leaders Alliance and Asian Professional Community gathered on Clubhouse, an audio-based social media app, to discuss the film and what resonated with them. One viewer shared a particularly personal reaction, tearing up when recalling scenes with the Grandmother, while others were reflective about their own immigrant experience and those of their parents.

People were coming into and out of the room throughout the evening and we went from talking about the film to the broader conversation of what it means to be Asian in America and collective belonging in the US.

Watch it again or share it with others!

To support Minari, watch the screening (first time or again) at A24 Screening Room. Stay in touch to continue the conversation!
