Tony Stubblebine has famously said that writers don’t really write for money. We write for self-expression.

Actually?

Most of us write for both.

And we used to get both on Medium. But now, those of us who write personal essays are getting the opportunity to express ourselves but we’re not getting much money. Or many readers.

Medium has slashed the amount of money — and the number of views — allotted to the writers of personal essays.

I’m not okay with that. I want to get paid!

But we have to write for the Medium we have, not the Medium we want.

So here’s my strategy going forward:

If a story isn’t worth money? Publish it on Medium.

If a story is worth money? Publish it off the platform first.

For instance?
