Should you write under your own name or should you use a pen name? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Ultimately, it depends on what your goals are and how much privacy you need.

I’m a writer. I’m also a Writing Coach. For decades, I’ve worked with writers to improve and publish their work. The question of what byline to use comes up often, especially for writers who are just starting out.

When in Doubt? Write Under Your Own Name

I usually recommend using your name rather than writing under a pen name — it makes it easier for your readers to connect with you. And let’s face it — one of the reasons we write is to connect, not just with readers but with friends and loved ones.

The first time I saw my byline in the “New York Times” for the whole world to see? That was an amazing moment — and it wouldn’t have been quite as amazing if that byline hadn’t been my very own name.
