Thanks for this Terrific Rejection!

No, really. I mean it.

A Medium writer celebrates getting a great rejection. (Photo by Christian Bowen on Unsplash)

I recently submitted a story to a Medium pub and asked to be added as a writer.

Of course, before I did that, I read their Writer’s Guidelines. I also spent some time reading that pub to make sure my story would fit in.

They published good essays. I’d be proud to be part of their line-up. But I had one question. The pub, Catness, ran personal essays by writers about their cats.

The essay I wanted to submit was a humor piece about a proposed cat-related law.

I knew that cat people would enjoy it. But was it right for this pub?

I wouldn’t have wasted the editor’s time if my essay was obviously wrong for the pub. For instance, I wouldn’t send them a story about a dog or a ferret. But a humor piece about taking a paid sick day to take care of your cat? That just might work.

I’ve had editors bend the rules for me a bit if they fell in love with the piece I’d submitted.
