I’ve been on Medium for over five years and in that time the measure of Medium success has changed. A lot. When I first arrived on the platform in 2019, claps were all that mattered.

The more claps you got? The more you got paid.

The Medium Metric Shifts, and Shifts Again

Then the algorithm changed. Suddenly claps didn’t matter. It was all about read time.

The longer paying members spent reading your work? The more you were paid.

Recently, the metric for payment shifted yet again.

Nowadays, in the Stubblebine Era? It’s all about Reader Engagement.

The more Medium members read, clap, comment about and highlight your work? The more you get paid.

I’m loving the Stubblebine era, but I’m well aware of the fact that the measure of Medium success could change again.

Or? Medium could decide to stop paying writers entirely.
