And Why It Doesn’t Always Have to Be

I’m a writing coach and editor-for-hire. For decades, I’ve worked with writers to improve and publish their prose. My current specialty is helping Medium members write better, more boost-able stories.

A writing client recently asked, “How long should a personal essay be? 1,000 words? 2,000 words? More? Fewer?” Since he wasn’t the first person to ask me that, I figured I’d write a brief article to share what I know.

So how long should your Medium story be?

As long as it takes to say what you want to say in an effective and engaging way. And no longer.

In other words?

Keep it short!

Don’t Waste Your Reader’s Time

Many readers, myself included, won’t read your essay if it’s going to take ten minutes.
