The Matrix trilogy is one of those rare blockbuster films that have caused varying interpretations, heated discussions, and countless arguments. One of its greatest achievements is making people think about their role in the universe and questioning their purpose. What is free will? Are our choices pre-determined? These are heady universal themes that will always be explored and dissected by old and new viewers alike. In this article, I am sharing one personal reading through the Christian themes of faith, free will, and knowledge.

The Architect who was presented as an elderly man with a white beard resembles the basic look that Christians and even non-Christians would envision God. God has no physical form, but the “bearded white man” is an accepted archetypal image to represent Him. Through Jesus Christ, Christians tend to compare how God might look like.

The Architect is the “father” of the Matrix just as God is the “father” of Adam & Eve. As the Architect wanted human beings to be subservient batteries to fulfill the machines’ energy needs (a state of innocence), so did the Christian God wanting Adam & Eve to be in a constant “state of innocence.”
