About Asparagus
Asparagus no longer publishes new work on Medium. Visit us at asparagusmagazine.com to keep up with our latest stories.
Asparagus is a publication dedicated to telling the large and small stories of how we can live sustainably, from an environmental, social, and cultural perspective. We aim to approach these stories in a way that is intersectional, impactful, firmly grounded in science, but also fun.
The Asparagus vision: Stories cultivating a just society on a healthy planet.
Asparagus started publishing online in February 2018. A successful crowdfunding campaign funded the first print issue, which came out in the summer of 2019. The publication is funded through a combination of reader subscriptions and donations, advertising by select organizations, government grants, events, and merchandise sales.
Asparagus is published on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations.

A Note About Comments
You will notice that no articles on Asparagus display responses, Medium’s version of comments. There are a lot of reasons for this. A big one is practical: Asparagus aims to create an inclusive and safe environment for all our readers and storytellers, and to ensure that, all comments would need to be monitored. We just don’t have enough people on the team to do that properly.
The brilliant folk over at The Establishment did a lot of thinking and writing about why they didn’t allow comments on their site, and the reasons behind their decision resonate here too.
At some point in the future we may have greater resources for managing conversations on our own site. If that happens, we will certainly take a look at the many online publications that successfully cultivate community through their comments sections, and learn everything we can from them. For now, we encourage you to discuss our stories on your favourite social media channels. If those include Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, loop us in!
