Aspecta partners with Ethereum Attestation Service as an important building block towards a more decentralized and trustless future, enabling developers to unlock the full potential of the Ethereum ecosystem.

In this article, we will explore the innovative ways in which Aspecta ID can leverage the Ethereum Attestation Service (EAS) to complete the robust identity infrastructure for developers globally. The EAS is a public good that allows for the creation, verification, and revocation of on-chain and off-chain attestations. With the joint efforts of EAS and Aspecta, we aim to unlock a whole new realm of non-financial use cases and unlock the full potential of the Ethereum ecosystem.

What is attestation?

An attestation is a declaration by a trusted third party, providing evidence that a particular statement or claim is true. It can serve as verification or validation of a particular claim or assertion’s accuracy, authenticity, or truthfulness. In the real world, attestations are often in the form of written documents or certificates and are often used in legal and business contexts. Overall, attestations play a critical role in establishing confidence and reliability in various fields and situations where accuracy and authenticity are important.

The Identity Layer

Combining attestation’s functionality with blockchain’s properties will unlock an additional primitive — identity. The internet was not created with an identity primitive in the first place, so people are often confused with the idea of account and identity. An account is a place where all the user behaviors are recorded and stored as raw data. Most users will be labeled with a series of tags through the raw data and that’s how the tech giants were able to make money through the personalized advertisement model. An individual’s identity contains all statuses associated with the specific person, and different combinations of the status can be used to identify and distinguish the person from others.

In the Web2 world, people hold accounts under different applications and since the user data is critical to the business, none of the companies are willing to share the user data with each other. Data silo is the main reason why we can only have accounts instead of one uniform identity in the Web2 world. However, with the invention of the public blockchain, especially Ethereum, which brings programmability to the blockchain, people can now own one single self-sovereign identity rather than split across different platforms. The most important benefit that cryptographic technology brings is that we can now store an individual’s data on the blockchain and build credentials across platforms without creating new accounts.

Ethereum Attestation Service

The Ethereum Attestation Service is a public good that enables the creation, verification, and revocation of on-chain and off-chain attestations. The project is being developed by a diverse community of passionate builders, including some of the earliest Ethereans. The platform is open-source and permissionless, available for anyone to use and build upon. Its goal is to establish a common layer for attestations that can be integrated by a variety of applications and protocols.

Using Ethereum Attestation Service, Aspecta can provide a secure and trusted foundation for developers’ digital identities, paving the way for new and exciting use cases. Developers can now document and demonstrate their status and footprints to a personal profile in which different aspects can be attested on-chain to maximize interoperability and composability. Aspecta will act as a gateway for developers to access and explore the Web3 world. In addition to the on-chain attestation, which can be served as a new verifiable credential, Ethereum Attestation Service also provides off-chain attestation to preserve the privacy of sensitive data. Those off-chain attestations can be timestamped on-chain and easily shared with authorized parties.

Here are some sample use cases in which Aspecta will utilize EAS’s features to enhance the developer’s user experience in the Web3 world.

Proof of Achievements & Skills

EAS provides an easy-to-integrate solution for Aspecta ID to prove developers’ achievements and skills on-chain. The on-chain attestations can serve as verifiable credentials that are immutable. For example, Aspecta ID can create an on-chain attestation that certifies the developer’s completion of a certain course for different skills, or an on-chain attestation that verifies the developer’s nomination in awards. Other parties can easily share and verify these on-chain attestations, providing a secure and trusted way to validate a developer’s skills and achievements.

Proof of Hack

Aspecta is using the Ethereum Attestation Service to provide an innovative way for developers to prove and document their entire journey at hackathons. From registration to the final result, hackers will be able to attest to their involvement in different hackathons. To help establish the developer’s credibility, Aspecta will attest to the achievements hackers have made, such as being nominated to the final list. This will provide a valuable credential for future opportunities, indicating the developer’s capabilities and achievements.

Proof of Residency at Hacker House

Aspecta has been partnering with hacker houses across the globe. One of the challenges most hacker houses face is hackers’ access to the hacker house. Unlike normal residency, hacker houses often host a large number of hackers for a short period of time. It is not secure and time-consuming for the host to have a key for each of the hackers. It brings inconvenience to hackers who do not have a house key. By setting an expiration date on the residency status, hackers can use their Aspecta ID as a key to access the hacker house.

Attestation-based access control

Aspecta can utilize the Ethereum Attestation Service to create and verify attestations about a user’s identity and access permissions. This can enable individuals to access online communities using their digital identity. Based on the attestations each individual holds, their permission to access certain channels or resources can be easily managed.

Looking forward Into The Future

As we move towards a more decentralized and trustless future, the importance of secure and trusted digital identities becomes increasingly evident. Aspecta will be partnering with Ethereum Attestation Service as an important building block towards this future, enabling developers to unlock the full potential of the Ethereum ecosystem.
