We don’t get much time
to be human,
to be the Universe
inside a human being,
to hear the sound
of ocean surf
rolling onto a beach,
see the wild beauty
of windswept trees.

And know those moments
when the Universe
inside us
sees something of its own
delicate beauty
reflected in the world,
like the fleeting moment
when a choir sings
as starlight fades into the dawn,
or we see the smiling gaze
of a child just born.

We don’t get much time
to be human,
and in difficult times
still find the inspiration
to sing and dance
and hold each other,
and know
in those fleeting moments,
as we go through life
and dreams
and doing the laundry,
there’s still the possibility
of love.

And as we gaze up at the sky
and wonder how
this human life
became so fraught,
we might consider
finding the gentle silence
inside us
that connects us to the stars
and the fragile beauty
of the Universe.

We don’t get much time
to be human,
but beauty is woven
into our being.
