Sometimes, You Need To Treat Yourself

Lessons from a Costco shopping trip

We’re standing in the aisle of Costco, staring at a mountainous display of french chocolate truffles. I’ve had them before, and they melt in your mouth like bits of joy and happiness, and pure ecstasy all rolled into one. They taste like liquified chocolate cake, like dreams of syrup and the skills of the finest pastry chef in all of Paris, and the kind of chocolate that Santa himself would probably guzzle. They are decadent, and they are delicious and somewhat dangerous if you’re trying to exercise any amount of restraint when it comes to sugar.

I told my husband that as we stared at the display.

Should we get these? They’re delicious but dangerous.

An older gentleman was passing by us in the same aisle and said, “They’re dangerous, but they are so worth it. I’d treat myself if I were you.”

I smiled at his friendliness, sincerity, and mutual love for chocolate, and they went into our shopping cart. I don’t know what made him stop to share his bits of wisdom with us, but it was a tiny exchange of kindness and joy that made my whole day.
