The Ones Who Remind Us To Feel

A love letter for artists everywhere

It was a bit of a day. It was the kind of day when everything was making me cry, the stress that was bubbling in my heart, and my head seemed to come pouring out of my eyeballs, whether I wanted it to or not, whether I understood why or not. I mean, I know why I’m crying — I’m currently 35 weeks pregnant — and let me tell you, those hormone swings are a real thing. Entering into new motherhood is stressful enough; I don’t need oceans falling from my eyelids, but fall they do.

And so, as I sat at my desk, I chose to play some musical theatre soundtracks instead of my typical instrumental playlist.

I work in musical theatre as a director and producer — but my love for this music started way before my career. I grew up on show scores. I do not know the lyrics to Taylor Swift songs, but I know every verse to The Secret Garden. And West Side Story. And Les Miserables. And Wicked, RENT, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Beauty and The Beast. I will not bore you — but the list is extensive.

If you had to make a soundtrack of my life, most of it would be rooted in musical theatre.
