A Note

Dear fellow member of the fairer sex,

First of all, I would like to congratulate you for your guts to take up a field that is predominately occupied by males. My advice to you is, do not get intimidated by the people around you. If you don’t understand copy constructors, that’s okay. But do not hesitate to raise your hand and ask for help. Yes, I know the classrooms are filled with people who seem to know everything that is to be known but don’t let that take you down. Do not be afraid to ask, to challenge the age old methods. You are here to learn and put all your efforts in it. There is tons of stuff out there that you haven’t explored. Learn new skills. Reach out to people you can relate to. There are so many resources out there. Think about constantly bettering yourself and no matter what happens do not lose hope. And do not ever think that you aren’t meant to be a techie.

There will be times when your classmates won’t listen to your logic, even though it is the most efficient piece of code or when a guy won’t acknowledge your skills. Don’t get mad. Take a deep breath and straighten the tiara on your head. You don’t have to tolerate things you don’t like just to be in a peer group or even to be socially acceptable. In the pursuit of being heard, don’t change yourself. Do not fall into stereotypes. If you want to join the virtual reality club,go ahead in you mini skirt and walk right in ;don’t let anyone’s perspectives stop you from doing what makes you happy . And certainly don’t put that pretty floral dress at the back of your closet. So girl, put on your favorite red lipstick and master that Java.

May the wings of your eyeliner always be even.

Sincerely,

The girl in your Computer Science class
