We are on the verge of a huge shift in the way we move.

Car ownership has long been perceived as a symbol of independence and played an important role in marking one’s success. However, times are changing.

Today, it’s becoming increasingly easier to get around cities in private vehicles without having to own one. Car renting, carpooling, carsharing, and other alternative car ownership platforms have led to billions of new mobility patterns, which is in turn shaping the automotive industry. And for younger people, buying a car is beginning to be viewed as both a hassle and a waste of money (not to mention an environmental disaster as more people are living in cities!)

Mobility being one of the areas we are passionate about at Aster, we wanted to share the European startup landscape of New Car Ownership that we put together.

We organized the Car Ownership landscape into the 8 categories listed below:

Ride sharing: startups that enable shared rides between drivers and passengers that have similar origins and destination pairings.

Car sharing: startups that enable customers to use a vehicle on a short-term basis, whether it’s for a couple hours, days or weeks, at unattended self-service locations 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Short-term car rental: startups that enable customers to rent a vehicle on a short-term basis, whether it’s for a couple of days or weeks, based on a stationary model.

Car subscription: startups that enable customers to use a vehicle for an all-inclusive fee, including insurance. Car-as-a-Service (CaaS) or car subscription is a growing segment in the value chain.

Sales & leasing: startups that enable customers to own a vehicle, through an increasingly digital user journey, and with financing agreements over a defined period.

AFTERMARKET

Spare parts: startups that sell or enable customers to buy replacement parts that are made by a company other than the car’s original manufacturer.

Maintenance: startups that enable customers to service a vehicle to keep it from having a major breakdown.

Aftermarket telematics: startups that sell telematics devices made by a company other than the car’s original manufacturer, which are retrofitted into vehicles via OBD-II.

Despite these evolutions, we believe that car ownership will not disappear yet because of the Car bundle. More information on that in this article: https://danco.substack.com/p/the-car-bundle
