How to Channel Through Automatic Writing
Soul Exploration and Creative Expansion
Over time, I’ve developed rituals and practices with the aim of increasing my creative flow: to overcome writer’s block and to find inspiration in my daily life. I smudge my space, practice yoga first thing in the morning, and look for ways to expand my consciousness to open my mind. Through these self-exploration processes, I discovered automatic writing.
Automatic writing is a form of channeling, where you allow a higher power to create or guide the words that you write. It involves allowing Spirit, the universal mind or your higher self to simply flow through you.
When I first began my journey into the spirit world, I didn’t realize that I was physically connected to my guides. I never realized how easy it was to access information from my subconscious or higher powers without the need of a medium. Only after I began to hone my intuition and expand my creative process did I discover the accessibility of channeling. Automatic writing has become my go-to for inner exploration.
What is Automatic Writing
Automatic writing is a form of channeling, where you allow a higher power to create or guide the words that you write. It is a psychic gift and one of the easiest types of psychic communication abilities to develop. It involves allowing Spirit, the universal mind or your higher self to simply flow through you.
Simply put, automatic writing is a practice of exploration experienced during a trance-like state where the journalist is an observer of the stream of consciousness. During an automatic writing session, the writer allows whatever flows through them to be written or typed into their chosen medium until the flow ends. Anyone can learn the process. My own experiences have been truly enlightening as I became the scribe and simultaneously the observer. In many ways, practicing automatic writing is like being ‘in flow’ while writing.
There are many books in circulation that are channeled works, such as:
- Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch
- The Cosmic Tradition by Max Théon and Alma Théon
- Bringers of the Dawn: Teachings from the Pleiadians by Barbara Marciniak
- The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham by Esther Hicks
- Signs: The Secret Language of the Universe by Laura Lynne Jackson
Benefits of Automatic Writing
Automatic writing has the benefit of connecting you to a higher source of information, whether that information comes from yourself (subconscious or superconscious self) or from higher entities (God, The Source, Spirit Guides).
A sense of enlightenment is gained from this practice, as well as a sense of clarity surrounding whatever has been the topic of the writing session.
Automatic writing enables you to return to your daily existence with a clear mindset, and a feeling of being anchored to your own truth.
If the writing session was about a certain decision or choice you must take, the revealed conclusion can help you take the necessary steps confidently without the veil of doubt pestering and bothering you.
Automatic writing can also help you hone your intuition and understand yourself or your subconscious on a deeper level. It provides you with an improved ability to trust your instincts and intuition
How to Channel Your Soul Through Automatic Writing
There are a few ways to begin the process of channeling through writing. I find that listening to binaural music or meditation music can help me enter a trance quickly and efficiently. The first time I attempted automatic writing, I listened to a youtube clip that walked me through the process, without breaking the trance.
I find that closing my eyes while I scribe helps me from judging anything that I write down, or focusing on the words, and thereby breaking the flow of information from coming my way. It might be messy (I often have to focus hard to reread what I wrote down) but I enjoy the feeling of pen and paper more than an empty word document better. It is your choice.
The most important thing you must do in advance is to find the questions that you want answered. The more emotionally charged, the better. I write down the question at the top of my empty paper, and prepare myself and my space for the session. Try to keep your questions simple. If you have many questions, break them up into different sessions of writing — this will make the process easier for you.
You will need:
- Empty paper or word document
- Quiet space to relax
- Open-ended questions or a problem needing to be solved.
Relaxing Your Mind/ Finding Your Space
If you need assistance entering the trance, here are a few resources I’ve previously used successfully:
- Binaural beats meditation
- Deep Relaxation Music
- Chakra Activation Music
- Automatic Writing Meditation (44 min)
- Another Automatic Meditation (12 min)
- Visualization Mediation
Other ways I’ve entered a state of trance include candle-staring meditations, like below:
Focus on a candle or other soft focal point, meditate and relax, and begin to enter your ‘sacred space’. When you are ready, put the pen to paper, and begin
- Breath Work:
Once you feel ready, allow your flow to begin. Don’t worry if the information doesn’t immediately come to you, or what you are writing doesn’t make any sense. In fact, if you don’t understand what you are processing- this is good news!
