The Venus Function — Love Is An Inside Job

Through my ongoing relationship with the Venus function in astrology, I’ve become aware that love is an inside job. This really gets at the heart of the Venus archetype. Let me explain.

I like to think of Venus as operating on two fundamental levels — love of self and love of the other. This dual function is elegantly represented by Venus having rulership of both Taurus and Libra. When Venus is operating in Taurus mode, the focus is on the self — self-care, self-love, self-sustaining. When Venus is operating in Libra mode, the focus is on the other — love of another, care for the other, sustaining the relationship.

Both sides of Venus are necessary, and we are functioning at our best when they are harmonized. But I would posit that the Taurus function is primary. Why? Because if you can’t truly love yourself, you can never truly love another. If you’re not in a healthy relationship with yourself, you’re unlikely to find true love and happiness in your relationships.
