Annular Solar Eclipse

The upcoming and the last annular Solar Eclipse wherein the Sun looks like a ring of fire would occur on 14th October, 2023 and as per Indian Standard Time, it would start at 8:34 PM and would continue till 2:25 AM of 15th October, 2023.

In this year (2023) 4 eclipses (2 Solar Eclipse and 2 Lunar eclipses) were supposed to occur. The first Solar Eclipse was on 20th April, 2023 and the 1st Lunar Eclipse was on 5th May, 2023. The Solar eclipse on 14th October, 2023 is the third Eclipse of this year and the last eclipse of this year would be a Lunar Eclipse on 28th October, 2023.

The Solar eclipse of 14th October, 2023 and the Lunar Eclipse of 28th October, 2023 are especially crucial because of the fact that 2 eclipses occuring in a same month (i.e. in the month of Ashwin) bears a strong correlation with disasters, geo-political tensions, accidents of mass scale etc. This is further substantiated by the fact that, this Solar Eclipse i.e. of 14th October, 2023 would be a day before the beginning of Navratri and would be in Kanya Rashi when Sun would be in Chitra Nakshatra. The Lord of Chitra Nakshatra is Mangal and Mangal represents earth in Vedic Jyotish. Also along with Sun, Chandra (Moon) and Budh (Mercury) would also be conjoined in Kanya Rashi.

Sutak period:- Usually during any eclipse there is a duration known as ‘Sutak’ during which any auspicious activity such as prayers, worship, travels, inauguration ceremony, marriage etc. should not be conducted. This ‘Sutak’ period for eclipses is calculated as follows:-

  • For Solar Eclipse→ Actual start time of the solar eclipse (minus) 12 Hours.
  • For Lunar Eclipse→ Actual start time of the lunar eclipse (minus) 9 hours.

Since the solar eclipse of 14th October, 2023 would NOT be visible in India hence the ‘Sutak’ duration would NOT be applicable for residents within India.

However, the Solar Eclipse of 14th October, 2023 is visible in the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Cuba, Jamica, Brazil, Chile and Venezuela hence my readers who are based out from these regions need to calculate the ‘Sutak’ duration accordingly i.e. ‘Sutak’ Start period is 8:34 PM IST (minus) 12 hours and end time of ‘Sutak’ is at the end time of the solar eclipse i.e. at 2:25 AM IST of 15th October, 2023. Readers are advised to convert the time in their respective time zones from where are currently staying.

This Solar Eclipse is auspicious for the following Rashis i.e. Mithun (Gemini), Singh (Leo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchik (Scorpio) and Makar (Capricorn).

This Solar eclipse is inauspicious for the following Rashi i.e. Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Virgo (Kanya) and Kumbh (Aquarius). Those belonging to these Rashis are advised not to step out and see this Solar Eclipse.
