Chariot Takes Co-op Gameplay Into the Deep
Canadian Frima Studio has concocted Chariot, an interesting project in which playing with another person elevates fun (and difficulty) to a new level.
In Chariot, the objective is to traverse a cave while carrying the titular burden with a rope tied to each end. Its creators call it a “2D couch platformer” because the game is meant to be played with your partner sitting beside you in case you need to high five them or punch them depending on the case.
I really dig a game mechanic that’s tied directly to the lore and purpose of the game. The chariot holds the remnants of a dead king and the characters you control are his daughter the princess and her fiancee, who seek to burry the dead to get his blessing to marry from beyond. It’s pretty simple and brilliant:

Along the way, the road will get more treacherous and on top of that players will need to deal with the king’s naggy spirit, which demands his body be buried in a place full of riches. To that end, you’ll need to get off the beaten path to find jewels and gold before reaching your final destination.
Frima showed the game at this year’s Game Developer’s Conference, Gamescom and PAX Prime, but today they announced the game will come out on Xbox One and PS4 on September 30th, with future PC and Wii U releases sometime on the horizon.
I hope to get my hands on this soon, hopefully with a friend I can stream it with, although the devs say you can power through the whole thing alone even if you’ll miss about 80% of the hidden stuff on the way. I better find someone right quick.
