You’ll know few greater things that gives you a real sense of accomplishment quite like setting goals and achieving them. Objective setting puts you in the driver’s seat and gives you the ability to shape your day or your life. It allows you to decide what you want to make of your day ahead.

The truth of the matter is that most people never attain their goals never. Why? Simple: they never sit down and spell out what their objectives are.

Even those who are ranked and considered smart, educated, high achievers can fail at goal setting. A study of Harvard Business School in 1979 found that 87% of the class (grads) had no goals at all, and of the 13% of the class who did have goals, just 3% had written out goals and a plan to achieve them.

Success is based on making progress, and progress is made by having clear goals. Start with writing your goals down and then use these golden rules for goal setting to ensure you accomplish your objectives.

Determination is Motivation on Steroids
Motivation is key to achieving goals. When you set goals for yourself, it must be something that is truly and deeply important to you, and that you see value in. If you don’t care about the outcome, then there’s little chance of you putting in the hard work to make it happen.

Be Deadly Specific — Details Matter
To achieve your objectives, use the SMART method, where goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound.

Why bother with details? Imagine trying to follow a GPS that said things like, “Turn left at some point, your destination is somewhere on the right”. Not helpful, right? Directions have to be specific and the same goes for your goals. Avoid setting inconsistent goals so it’s easier to stay focused and moving in the same direction personally and professionally.

Goal setting details should also include:
— Having a way to measure your success. Set precise amounts, set dates and be able to calculate when you have reached success.
— Setting realistic yet challenging goals. If you have no hope of achieving your dreams, it will only demoralize you.
— Having a deadline or a time element, otherwise, how will you know when you can celebrate your success?

Make an Action Plan and Execute
Having a plan of action gives you the steps to follow. Break your goal down into a step-by-step process and write out each objective that you need to achieve to reach your ultimate goal.

Never Give Up — No Matter What
Goal setting is an ongoing, every day, every week, every month activity. You’ll need to build in reminders to keep yourself on track and review your goals on a regular basis. Persistence is often the key ingredient in reaching your objectives, and once you attain your goals, keep setting new ones and moving forward.
