For years women have been mistreated. One in five women and girls, including 19 per cent of women and girls aged 15 to 49, have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner within the last 12 months. Yet, 49 countries have no laws that specifically protect women from such violence. Men in the government have been getting away with sexual assualt for years. 750 million women and girls were married before the age of 18 and at least 200 million women and girls in 30 countries. Many women and girls get forced into marriage without their consent. In 18 countries, husbands can legally prevent their wives from working; women don’t have a right for their own lives. Gender equality for me is being equal to men. I believe that gender equality is not men power; but equal power. We are all human and we should not be treated less than one another, we all pump blood, we all have a heart and we all love the same way so we shouldn’t be mistreated or misplaced. We all need to be treated as equals and the world would be such a better place.

Women get sexually and physically assualted by their intimate partners. Many men get away with away with what they do due to being intimate with their partners. In india men are allowed to sexually assualt their partner; in a video I once saw a man went into the police station to report what he had done to his wife and the police had told him to go home and deal with it with his wife. Men get away with many things. The kind of underwear, clothes even makeup women wear make men believe that it equals consent. A girl in ireland was sexually assulted and when she went to court her panties were shon and court and due to the way they claimed she wanted it and she ended up killing herself.

Men in the government get away with sexual assualt every year. Women afraid to speak out due to the men being in higher power with the government women get afraid no one will believe them. Last year 2 men in the US government were accused of sexual assualt and the government had fired them right away so they wouldn’t be tied. Women are afraid due to men in power because they are afraid they wont be believed and it is not far for women to feel that way. No women should be afraid to open up about a trauma and get justice they deserve.

In many countries and religions force women and girls to get married without their consent. Young girls are forced to get married to men twice their age. Women are forced to be in arranged marriages which lead to unhappiness. Women and girls are forced into relationships where they become unhappy and things become unsafe. Everyone should have a right to there own lives and to be able to be happy. It is unfair for women or girls to be forced into something without their consent.

Based off my personal experience living in a house full of men I was not allowed to dress a certain way. I was told my body was going to be used for men and that they would only like me for my body. I was told no guy would like me for me just for my appearance. With that being said when I was 12 — now I am 18; I was not allowed to wear anything too short or revealing because older guys would look at me. When I was younger I would wait at the bus stop and because I developed faster than most girls it caught guys attention; so while I was waiting for the bus guys would drive by and than make a u-turn and try to pick me up completely ignoring my age and it made me believe that maybe my body was for guys. No girl or women should feel that way we should not feel their bodies are not their own. We need to feel our bodies are our own not anyone elses. Being in the Awcca program has taught me that my body is mine and no one elses. I have control over who I am and what I do and all women and girls should have a chance to feel this way; feel that they have control of who they are and their bodies and not be afraid of being who they are or want to be.

I believe men and women should be treated as equals. If women did half the things that men did it would a conflict but because men have so much power they get away with as much as they want. Men can sexually assault or physically assault women and if those men are athletes or anything with high power and the judge is a male they can get away with it; it is completely degrading to women. Men get to chose what happens to womens’ bodies and if they should have an abortion. Without women men would not be here but yet this is a mans world. We are the ones who carry men for 9 months of our lives and yet they get to chose what happens to us and our bodies. Men should not have that choice over women not only that they should treat us as equals. Women should have a choice for their future and lives and should not be afraid to speak out about their traumas. It is up to us to grow as a community and fight for eachother. We should not live in fear nor have our lives chosen for us it is our lives and our choice. It is disgusting that men get to chose our futures for us and as women we need to stand for one another and stop others from chosing our lives for us.
