The Man of Steel
A truly love it or hate it film
Little can be say about this movie that hasn’t been said already.
But for me it is always amusing to see to what degree can a movie be a truly love it or hate it type of film. From what I read on my Facebook or Twitter newsfeeds people can either be dissapointed or really impressed.
What do you need to be impressed by this movie? have an open mind? understand that movies based on comics must stop trying to be so true to the comics and instead try to be more grounded on reality? or is the opposite needed¿
Nolan’s Batman trilogy was so successful because it brought reality into a comic, it managed to preserve the mythology but with a perfect translation into reality. But on the other hand, Iron Man was perfect as a “just like the comic” version and attracted all the attention and money it deserved, and for that matter The Avengers also seems to follow the same line.
Man of Steel actually dwells into the story of “Alien being discovered in earth and its aftereffects” and it erases a lot of the campiness and overall way too powerful and perfect image of the hero.
He feels the burden of being what he is, he searches for himself, he struggles along his dad about the effect in humanity of his presence and he is not invincible, kryptonite is not the only thing that can defeat him and he ultimately has to make some hard choices never before seen in a Superman storyline in regular timelines.
Is it too little for the dissapointed or are they the not really a fan of comics/superman kind of people?
Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have ruined a bit the expectations of people, specially with the Nolan name involved. People wanted to feel that “this could really happen in my world” experience once again but let us be serious: how can one really achieve that line with someone like Superman? get real!
It is a good movie, maybe a bit long, but is it really dissapointing? i don’t think so, but maybe I’m one of the “love it” guys and can’t really understand the hate.
