I’m Jess Simmons, currently serving as an ATCEMS Field Medic stationed in the Mueller area. I worked as an EMT for two years out in the county before being hired into the big city in 2017. On my days off, you can find me in my backyard — checking on my beehive, or sitting on the patio making s’mores with my boyfriend in front of the chiminea. When I’m not at home or at work, I enjoy hanging at the climbing gym or riding my motorcycle to try a new restaurant in town with my gal-pals.

Where are you from originally and what brought you to Austin?
I grew up in Bryan, TX. I moved to Austin in 2013 because I was attracted to the energy — the people, the Tex-Mex food, and the endless possibilities of things to do, especially outdoors.

What inspired you to become a medic/What attracted you to this career choice?
I knew I wanted to work in the medical field, but wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to study. Someone suggested I try working in EMS while going to school. I took one semester of college for the EMT-B program, and was hooked. Being able to do medicine in the field attracted me the most. Every day is different and I get to stay moving.

How long have you been with ATCEMS and what motivated you to work here?
I’ve been with ATCEMS a little over 2 years now. Working for a busy 9–1–1 system in a city that I love attracted me — along with the structure, reputation, and scope of practice that ATCEMS is known for and has.

What is your favorite part about working here at ATCEMS?
Taking care of others. Whether it’s helping with a life-saving procedure or simply making someone laugh by telling a really bad joke (I have lots of them), I really enjoy making someone feel better.

If you had guests visiting Austin for the weekend, where is the first place you would take them?
Snorkeling at Barton Springs. With clear, 68 degree water year-round, it’s the perfect spot to spend a warm, sunny day.

What is your favorite taco joint in town?
Tyson’s Tacos. The fried egg & brisket taco is a must.

What do you do on your days off to relax and unwind?
Being creative helps me unwind. I enjoy metalworking, painting, or finding a new project to work on around the house or in the garden. I also enjoy riding my motorcycle around town or with my boyfriend to unwind.

Who inspires you?
My co-worker, and one of my best friends: Katie Lorenz (she’s going to hate me for this). We were in the same academy together and from day one she’s set the example of what a great medic should be. She’s committed, thorough, patient, and compassionate.

What is the next place you would like to visit? Why?
Locally: Washington. Two of my dearest friends just moved to Seattle, so I’d love to see them and then explore Olympic National Park.
Internationally: Lugano, Switzerland. I have a pen-pal who lives there and the pictures she sends to me are incredible! I would love to go skiing in the Swiss Alps, eat all of the Swiss chocolate, and bump over to Milan to explore.

Word of advice for an aspiring medic?
Be strong; be soft. This job requires an incredible amount of mental and physical strength. Don’t forget to take care of yourself.
