Captain Capra at a special event.

I’m Andres Capra and am a tactical paramedic with ATCEMS. I live in Round Rock with my wife and 4 kids. My wife and I like to live an active, healthy lifestyle and we stay busy with our kids and hobbies outside of work.

Where are you from originally and what brought you to Austin?
I’m originally from Guadalajara, Mexico. I moved to Austin after I got out of the Marine Corps because it was where my sister lived and was close to my mom.

What inspired you to become a medic/What attracted you to this career choice?
It looked like a fun and exciting career! I’m not much of an office worker…so I knew I wanted something different. Actually, I’ve never worked in an office environment.

How long have you been with ATCEMS and what motivated you to work here?
I’ve worked with Austin for 14 years. I came to ATCEMS because of the department’s reputation. The pay, benefits, and retirement package are all great reasons to stick around.

What is your favorite part about working here at ATCEMS?
The fact that every shift is different. You never know what you’re going to see or do. And the fact that you get to work autonomously, while making hard decisions.

If you had guests visiting Austin for the weekend, where is the first place you would take them?
To some of my favorite trails.

What is your favorite taco joint in town?
TacoDeli

What do you do on your days to relax and unwind?
Workout and/or run.

Who inspires you?
Ultra-runner David Goggins.

What is the next place you would like to visit?
Some remote mountain range — I love being in the mountains more than anything.

Word of advice for an aspiring medic?
It’s a great career if you choose the right place to work. It’s fun and challenging, but probably different from what you think it is. Go on some ride-outs to see what it’s all about!
