5 Issues With “Wonder Woman”

A comment/reply on Shani Silver’s recent article about “Wonder Woman”

So Shani Silver recently published an article on her thoughts about the male-only writers for the new “Wonder Woman” movie. And seeing a magazine covering the movie tonight got me thinking about some things too.

  1. Why do the men get to wear all the cool outfits?

Look at this picture and tell me what you see. (Seriously leave me a comment and tell me)

Four men. One woman. All different “powers” and augmentations. Different races, if you will.

All that is great. What I also see is that every man in the DC universe (almost) is dressed from head to toe covering almost every bit of skin, but Wonder Woman is left to freeze her bum off in some tiny, skin tight body suit.

In the movie we see Wonder Woman in a winter setting where it is snowing. And she’s wearing…that.

2. Why is she wearing heels all the time?

You don’t see the men in DC or Marvel movies running around in flip flops and jock shorts. That’s because they get shoes that are actually practical for butt kicking.

No woman can run through snow, beach sand, or kick anyone’s butt in high heels. Not even wedges. So tell me why does Wonder Woman have to?

Oh that’s right! Heels make your calves and butt look good. Silly me.

3. Last one about her outfit…Where is her armor?

The wristlets and shield are great for deflecting bullets but honestly what if she gets overwhelmed? Batman has body armor and Wonder Woman has bare skin all over the place. Worse, her neck, major arteries, and chest are exposed to her enemies for them to just take their shot.

4. How many men are going to try to tell her no?

One thing I do like is that she doesn’t care about being told no. But seriously, do men just think women will listen every time they open their mouths? Oh yeah — they do think that.

5. Where are her muscles?

Don’t get me wrong. Gal Gadot is gorgeous. She’s Israeli, she’s skinny, she’s tall. But when you look at a Wonder Woman comic, she’s ripped. If the industry expects men to buff up for super hero roles then why wouldn’t the women do the same thing?

As a weight lifter I can’t imagine how a woman who looks like Gal Gadot could expect to pass as an Amazonian. Especially considering the other Amazons are cross fit athletes, wrestlers, and weight lifters. And they’re all cut.

To the left is Brooke Ence. Now, there’s an Amazon. She’s buff and she looks the part. She’s not wearing heels.

How does it make sense for Gal Gadot to play Wonder Woman without arms like these or legs like these? Or anything close.

It is almost insulting to believe that the only female super hero we actually have a movie about doesn’t even look like a super hero. She simply looks like another model-actress.

To add further insult, there’s a Gal Gadot “Wonder Woman” workout on Pinterest… right.

I know it was important for women to have their own super hero movie about a female hero. I was seriously advocating for a Black Widow movie or even Hawk Girl. And it is nice to have some female butt-kicking action out there. However, the ball was dropped with Wonder Woman. Some things that are important to women, like the presence of a beautiful female hero, were hit on but the other important things like strength, being taken seriously, not being a sex-object still — those things were missed big time in the new “Wonder Woman” movie.

Nice try Hollywood.

Thanks for reading!
