Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round

A Letter To My Mother

Dear Mama,

Thank you for seeing me in my father’s eyes. Thank you for bringing me into this world when people probably told you it was a bad idea.

Thank you for introducing me to clay, paint, and cinema.

Thank you for always telling me that my hair was just the way it was supposed to be and never complaining about how hard it was to take care of. Thank you for having friends with tattoos and wheelchairs and dreadlocks and same sex partners. For showing me that “different” is wonderful and beautiful.

Thank you for playing Sweet Honey In The Rock.

Thank you for hanging a yellow poster above my desk that said PRIDE. For showing me how to form immaculate letters in ink, and assuring me there was no need to rush.

Thank you for cooking and baking with me always, instead of for me. I know it must’ve been difficult letting me separate the egg whites, beat them into a cloud and fold them into the batter when I couldn’t do it as perfectly as you could, but because of that, now I can. Thank you for letting me invent new “recipes” in the kitchen even when I would make a horrible mess and the food came out inedible. Because now, my inventions work. They taste good. They nourish. They fly.

Because of you I have the confidence and faith to be creative, taking big leaps in life, knowing that I will always, somehow, be taken care of. Ain’t gonna let nobody turn me ‘round.

Love,

Funky Wonder Bean
