Dr. Nancy Abu-Bonsrah isn’t just any neurosurgery resident — she is the first black woman in the history of Johns Hopkins to hold this prestigious title.

Not only that, she is a Ghanian immigrant, having only been the U.S. since the age of 15. She hopes to be able to take her skills to underserved areas, including her home country.

“It’s something I didn’t really think about too much until I opened the envelope and was like, ‘woah’,” she told The Independent. “Then talking to other people in the department confirmed the suspicion.”

This marks an important milestone not just for women but black women everywhere.
