Why is a 24-year-old woman running for congress?

Why is a 24-year-old woman running for congress?

I never wanted to be a politician. I am an activist, an educator, a social entrepreneur — a citizen who is committed to environmental…action, public health, and equal justice. ¶ Grassroots community organizing is hardwired into my DNA, nurtured by a cadre of doers in Marin County, California. When it was revealed that Marin — despite its unparalleled natural beauty, high concentration of organic farms, and protected lands — had the highest breast, prostate, and melanoma cancer rates in the world, my mother sprung into action. As a young girl, I watched her deftly orchestrate her first campaign to unite boots-on-the-ground…

Get A Life

My daughter told me that I had no life. She wanted to hurt me in a moment of intense conflict and she succeeded. Words spoken in anger are usually rubbed raw by honesty. She truly thought that I had no life.

I am not a feminist. Being a feminist says I want special treatment for being a woman.
I TOO AM SORRY

Actually, no. That is most emphatically not what feminism is about. Feminism is, has always been, will always be about equality and equal treatment of all human beings, something we have not achieved yet. Which is why we’re feminists, that is people who fought for universal suffrage, self-determination and freedom for women and men alike. NOT special treatment. Just basic equality.

Violence against women continues to be a relevant and recurring issue with historical origins.

There are many opinions surrounding the issue of violence against women. Many partake in victim blaming, which basically tells abuse…It has become commonplace — so much in fact that it isn’t even surprising to some. Across cultures, the notion that men have an authoritative rule over women is normalized, as well as encouraged. Young boys are usually taught that masculinity is an important trait which is easily obtained by being dominant in society, while young girls are usually taught that they must abide by certain rules in order to keep themselves out of harm, and these involve being submissive to the decisions of male…

We Should Start Asking For Stuff

Can you please read this post? This is my first request among my list of requests I plan to make this year. ¶ Why? Because I’m sick of being complacent and I think everyone should start asking for things. I often feel like a nerd, shy to ask the most popular person out on date. ¶ Over and over I read about how women make less than men and that most don’t negotiate their salary at the risk of being perceived as “pushy”. Only 29% of screenwriters are women.

Navigating Gender Politics in the Workplace

“I don’t know why she doesn’t like me. I think it’s because I get along better than she does with our male manager.”“I don’t know why she doesn’t like me. I think it’s because I get along better than she does with our male manager.” ¶ Explaining the dynamics of her workplace, my friend Janet felt that there was no question that she was doing well performance-wise. She was staffed on challenging and highly visible projects, and received only positive feedback from her manager. But, there was one aspect that was troubling her.

Modern feminism issues: Has the definition of success evolved over the years?

The motto of this year’s International Women’s Day was “a call for parity”. In 2016, equality within the workplace is a bigger topic than…ever before. The good news is that now the conversation is filled with more than just complaining women. More and more men are joining in and that’s great. We all want to help women break the glass ceiling, close the pay gap and increase their participation on C-Suite. We all want women to be successful! ¶ The bad news is that our definition of a successful woman hasn’t evolved much over the years.

Hi Jason,

It seems you’re concerned that women are only fighting for women’s benefits when they talk about feminist issues. While it understandable…that you think so, (there are tons of anti-feminists who keep tossing out articles and YouTube rants claiming this as if it’s true, after all) it is however a rather uninformed view! ¶ The reality is that women—feminists of all genders, to be precise—are already helping tackle a great deal of issues that are unfair or unequal towards men: ¶ Feminists are heavily involved in prison reform, drug decriminalization and harm reduction; issues that primarily affect men.
