The decision of choosing a specific laptop is as difficult as it is important, at least when you have a budget to look after.

Most of the companies are notorious for over advertising their benefits while trying to hide their issues or lack of quality or features. And many times the review videos are not that actually in-depth or true.

Here is a review of MI Notebook Ultra with 16GB ram and i5 processor.

At first thought, the people who are not into gaming or heavy graphics workloads like video editing or auto cad software, this laptop seems to be a clear winner. But there’s a hidden cost which we need to consider it.

Note:

This review is my opinion and have tried my best to be objective and having correct facts and experience about this laptop. Somethings might be different that then review written down and so it’s always a good idea to verify with other sources and do some own research before coming to any conclusion.

Pros:

  • The display is in the top 3 in the segment
  • The metal build body look and feels premium
  • Love the keyboard (Numpad is missing though)
  • Performance is good for all day-to-day workloads
  • The fingerprint is fast and most of the time get the job done in one try
  • A macro key which can be configured to run any of the program or script
  • USB type c charging

Neutral:

  • The sound of the speaker is alright after the tweak in DTS (without tweaking it’s very low)
  • Battery backup is alright (it will highly fluctuate base on your settings and the type of work that you do on the laptop)
  • Port selections are alright
  • Brightness is alright for the price segment
  • The wifi strength could have been better (Not the strongest capturing strength i have seen)
  • The 16:10 ratio is better for sheet work but it’s okay to have feature.
  • One hand hinge opening is alright

Cons:

  • The camera quality of my unit is bad very grainy images and videos
  • It seems many models have some kind of defect based on review from youtube and amazon (1 star reviews) so it does make sense if you would like wait a little and see more reviews before purchasing.
  • There is not a lot of support or transparency when it comes to drivers on the website
  • The company’s mobile has been found to have remote hidden software to censorship some content we don’t know about the laptop.
  • According to some people, their bad reviews are not being shown on the MI website which is misleading.
  • You can’t buy MI extended warranty if you buy from amazon.
  • No GPU
  • Touchpad could have been better, the bottom side is not good, seems a bit uneven and different noise between the left and right click.
  • The spacebar started making some different noises on pressing from the day the laptop arrived.
  • Ram cannot be upgraded
  • The laptop design is a copy of a Mac which is not good when we are taking it out in front of others.

General:

  • Any new laptop you buy in or after 2021, generally comes with SSD and that makes the booting time very fast in all laptops.
  • Most of the laptop that comes with at least 10th gen I5 or AMD 4000/5000 series processor would be performant enough for all the day-to-day work.
  • Thunderbolt port is great but the USB type c ports are more than enough for most people.

Verdict:

If you can stretch the budget to 10K INR more, you should go for Lenovo or Dell which have higher reliability. The only reason i thought this laptop make sense is because of the screen, other than that any AMD processor laptop while give you better performance, battery life and most of the features at same or lower price.

Or the new Asus line-up has K15 OLDED screens which has more beautiful and correct colour accurate display in the same budget segment.
