12 Days of Sketch | Day 10

Beautiful photography is a fundamental part of design and user experience and should be celebrated just as much in UX design as it is traditionally in print design. Today I’ll talk through a few tricks in Sketch 52 that make managing and designing with photography a little easier and more fun!

Photo Fill

When working on a UX project, you don’t always have your end photography assets available throughout the entire project, but leaving that spot blank just isn’t the same. Sketch 52 makes it super easy to get beautiful, high-quality placeholder photography. Just tap into Layer → Data and you have the option to choose random photography from Unsplash, face photography, and even a curated search on Unsplash.

Drag & Drop Photos

If the image layer is a symbol, you can click and drag any photo right into the overrides panel. If done this way, the photo will automatically scale to fit the frame and properly adjust on resize. It will also automatically replace the original photo so that you don’t end up with any unnecessary layers in your symbol!

Knockout Type

No outlining, no expanding, no masking, knockout text can be done as a fill in Sketch with the Craft Plugin. All you have to do is tap into the data panel → photos tab → and with the text selected tap a category, and there you go!
