Every sketchnoter hits a creative rut eventually.

Many wait it out, but some know quicker ways to break free.

Here are the 5 top tips I’ve learned over the last 8 years to bring new life to your sketchnotes. 👇🧵

#1 — Try some new tools 🛠

Some tools WANT to be used a certain way.

Playing with new tools can encourage you to explore different styles.

And the novelty of a new pen, paper or app can restore the joy of sketch.

#2 — Copy someone else’s style 🥷

Picasso said

“Good artists copy, great artists steal.”

Same with sketchnoting. Find some sketchnoters with different styles and try to emulate their style.

Keep what you like, discard the rest.

#3 — Remake an old sketchnote 🔁

Don’t just focus on new ideas, revisit old ones.

By redoing old sketchnotes:

• You’ll see your progress

• You can make them better

• You’ll revise the information

#4 — Ask for prompts ❓

If you really want to do something different, get ideas from other people.

You will stick to the same topics or style because it’s YOUR interests and style. Prompts from other people will be more diverse.

A fun challenge is to ask for an icon to work in.

#5 — Set a new limit 🙅‍♂️

Limits are freeing.

Apps can be the worst for this. With all their pen and colour options, we have too much freedom.

Choose a new limit

• How many (or any) Colors

• How long you have to sketch

• How many points in your sketchnote

TLDR — 5 Tips to breath new life into your sketchnotes

• Try some new tools 🛠

• Copy someone else’s style 🥷

• Remake an old sketchnote 🔁

• Ask for prompts ❓

• Set a new limit 🙅‍♂️
