This Week Overview

This week, Data Science influencers have talked about:

  • Amazing Data Science & Machine Learning (ML)Resources
  • Good Data Science
  • Perseverance Travel To Mars

Here are all the details for each topic:

Amazing Data Science & ML Resources

Influencers have been sharing massive data science content comprising: amazing machine learning and deep learning research papers, articles, books and examples of real-life applications.

Dr. Ganapathi Pulipaka has shared an article that was published in the InsaneApp blog on February 17th, 2021 that presents a picture of the 100+ machine learning algorithms that you should know in 2021. This picture gives an overview of all the algorithms related to the four types of machine learning approaches: supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised and reinforcement learning.

He also shared a link to a medium post that presents a very interesting list of insightful machine learning and deep learning research papers, technical articles and real-life examples of use cases. There you will find e.g. a paper on how to use space-time attention for video understanding, an article that presents The Grand Tour, a tool that allows you to visualize neural networks, or an amazing concrete application of computer vision to allow wind turbines to automatically slow down to prevent bird collisions.

Kirk Borne has shared an article from Ubuntu Pit website that gives the top-20 best data science books available online for free. This list comprises books that cover many topics in data science from the introduction to data science basic concepts, theory, models and algorithms, as well as implementation guides, to data science in practice with different applications as attack detection.

Good Data Science

This week, influencers have been sharing content about the concept of Good Data Science: interpretable and ethical machine learning.

Andreas Staub shared an article published on Medium in May 2019 titled “Democratised AI — The Black Box Problem”. This article talks about the interpretability of machine learning models as a requirement for AI democratization. According to the author, AI should be well understood and transparent to avoid falling into traps like producing a “system (that) participates in perpetuating societal bias that hurts people and harms our society”. Finally, this article underlines that “Good Data Science requires interpretability”.

He shared another Medium article title Applying Behavioral Science To Machine Learning. This article explains how understanding the behavior of AI agents “is one of the pivotal challenges of the next decade of AI”. It cites a research paper published by MIT that explores a radical approach that attempts to explain the behavior of AI systems observing them in the same (way) we study human or animal behavior.

Perseverance Travel To Mars

Last week, NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover Landed successfully and this was a news talked about in the Data Science community.

Andrew Ng shared a video from the control room and commented that these exuberant, cheering faces are a great reminder that Perseverance’s technology success is also a human success.

Carlos E. Perez shared his fascination with the NASA probes that have explored Mars by sharing a video about the 7 minutes of terror.

Yves Mulkers shared that this Mars operation is running on Linux. He also shared a high-resolution image shot by Perseverance while landing on Mars.
