Japanese often think of themselves as a homogenous country. Economically speaking, Japan is a great nation because they amazingly strived hard, making them the 3rd largest economy in the world ( by GDP ) they survived even without English.

However, in this era of globalization and countries are conducting businesses all over the world, Japan has to keep up with this inevitable phenomena. That being said, English is integral as the language goes hand in hand with globalization.

Hence, some Japanese companies have started adopting English as their official language such as Rakuten, the famous E-commerce platform, Fast Retailing, which operates the fashion brand Uniqlo, and the multinational auto and truck parts manufacturer Bridgestone, to name a few.

Similarly, our company Atrae, is sort of doing the same thing. Last year, I joined the team primarily for this purpose. My goal is to help the company globalize — improve my colleagues English skills that will enable them expand our business abroad and manage a global team. It’s indeed a prerequisite.

Currently, I’m responsible for teaching around 15 people in the office. Impressively, some of them are able to speak good English beforehand!

Our CEO himself strongly believes that being able to speak English is a necessity!

We’ve been trying to create an English environment in the office for a year now. I’m always happy to see them try and do their best communicating with me at “ nomikai “ or drinking sessions, during lunch ( yes we have lunch with English Only Policy regularly and I personally call it “ lunch and learn “ ) or like even just a casual chitchat while they brew coffee in our pantry.

Friday nomikai!

I have great colleagues and I’m working with a great team. I truly desire to help them create a global mindset and make Atrae a unique and a cool organization that is known all over the world. You see my mission is directly connected to our vision “create the company that attracts people in the world.”

“ The difference between success and failure is a great team. “

Together, I believe we can make Atrae a global organization!
