TAIWAN Lawyer’s USA🇺🇸 studying abroad experience (part 1)

(Eng ver below)

If someone asked me what I gained from studying in the United States?

I would definitely say, Be tough!

  1. Advocating for Yourself and Breaking the 「Impossible」

When discussing applying to American law schools with friends from China, one mentioned not affording the application fee ($75); meanwhile, a friend from South Africa shared that despite their country’s English proficiency, they still had to take the TOEFL (English proficiency test for studying in the US), which they skipped.

Why?

Because both had effectively communicated with the schools through letters!

The words written on the application form: No exceptions!

Suddenly, it means nothing.

America truly exemplifies the notion that rules are made by “people”

2. Banking on Your 「Unnoticed」

Not only in the US, but many countries have similar scenarios: just as with credit card and insurance terms, the fine print in advertisements is crucial (if you’re too lazy to read, consult a lawyer).

There’s a longstanding 「shopping」 website in the US (where using the website to buy from a specific brand refunds you a percentage of the purchase amount). Typically, for purchases of a few hundred dollars, you receive the rebate promptly.

However, once, when I bought a computer, there was no sign of my rebate 😏

Doesn’t it seem like those deceitful scammers who, once they gain your trust, start swindling you for money and affection?

At such times, it’s imperative to keep all evidence meticulously and persist in appealing.

In the end, they’ll nonchalantly remark:

「Alright, I’ll refund your rebate:)」

Pretending as though nothing happened 😏

.

3. Face-to-face Trumps Written Correspondence

Sometimes, we assume written correspondence preserves evidence. But in reality, America highly values face-to-face interactions. Have you not observed the multitude of keyboard warriors who, when meeting in person, adopt a deferential and respectful demeanor 🫡

Hence, whether you wish to lodge a complaint or assert your rights:

In-person meetings >>>>>> Phone conversations >>>>>> Written correspondence.

To be continued…

.

Merchants’ hearts are just as black as squid ink pasta!
