… Which, yes, is a thing. According to the about page, JAGRA is dedicated towards safeguarding the “history of Japanese home consoles and game software for posterity as a cultural heritage”.

Anyhow, they recently announced their effort towards flattening the curve. Thankfully the translation is provided by @Cheesemeister3k, who is fluent in Japanese, hence why Google Translate did not butcher the following…

“We’re providing Super Famicom sets to 100 households with kids who have to stay at home due to the coronavirus.

* Qualifications
1. The household has children under 16
2. You can pay for shipping C.O.D.

* How to apply
Please see this site (
http://jarga.or.jp) for details.”

The full blog post does indeed have more details, such as how…

“The included software is “Super Donkey Kong” and “Final Fantasy 6”. Both are easy to play and I think they are masterpieces that even beginners can enjoy.

Various masterpiece game software can be purchased at online shopping and retro game stores. We hope you will have a fun time as a communication tool for parents and children.“

Once again, I really wish I understood Japanese, otherwise I would have already sent an email to JAGRA, asking if they’ve worked with any retro game resellers on any special programs (like discounted Super Famicom games, specifically for this initiative).

Oh, and as you can already see, and have already figured out…

“Since it is a used item, there are sunburns, scratches, etc., but there is no problem with operation check.

We clean and sterilize as much as possible.”

Sorry to all the collectors out there. Yet I can still totally see at least one grubby eBay seller in America trying to get a hold of a JAGRA edition Super Famicom.

The post also includes photos of individuals cleaning Super Famicom systems and controllers. And…

… Yeah, that one guy in the middle, is totally wearing his face mask wrong. Oy vey.
