What happens when you combine an old desktop driving game toy, one of Yu Suzuki’s earliest hits (well, a rom of it at least), and a Raspberry Pi (plus some other stuff)? Why, you get the Tomy Turnin’ Turbo Dashboard OutRun Arcade by Matt Brailsford.

As one might assume, such a hack is not easy, especially given Matt’s self imposed constraint: “keep it as stock looking as possible”, which meant: “I must use only the existing inputs, so I’d have to use the shifter, steering wheel, ignition and push button that came with the toy.”

The entire process has been documented and is ready for your perusal, provided you’re interested in trying it yourself. Again, the project might utilize a kids toy, but it ain’t child’s play. Oh, and in case you’re wondering what’s next: After Burner, maybe?

Now, since we’re on the subject of mods, now’s probably a good time to share yet another vid This Does Not Computer. Perhaps some of you might recall that a Game Boy Color’s screen cannot be backlit like all the other models.

So, as one might expect, alternative approaches has cropped up. And the following… while not quite picture perfect… is perhaps the best solution we have. Thus far at least…
