My Latest Internet Crush: The Hudson Honey AKA The Pink Bombergirl

It all began with the video above, in which Hardcore Gaming 101 decided to visit an abandoned R&D laboratory for Hudson Soft. It’s not where Bomberman and other beloved Hudson softs were crafted; all that took place at their HQ in downtown Sapporo (before the company moved to Tokyo). Whereas the outskirts is where they developed hardware; perhaps much of the groundwork of the PC Engine were laid inside that very building?

But the even bigger mystery is the mini train system; what’s the story behind that? Though most who know about it are content to simply state that it’s “magical” (no argument there) and leave it at that. The above ends with some footage from another video, circa the mid 90s, and here’s that clip in its entirety. It stars Hudson Honey, aka the Pink Bomber from Bomberman, trying to sneak a peek at what Hudson’s working on…

About that ending: I’m not sure if it’s the video’s uploader, ASSEMblergames, explaining the fate of the company after the fact, or if its poor fortunes were actually touched upon in the original video (am assuming it’s mostly footage from assorted PC Engine and PC-FX titles, which we don’t see). Could be either case? Though the most important thing here is how… dreamy Hudson Honey/Pink Bomber is. Here’s another clip, of a music video actually…

Hudson apparently loved having the Bomberman cast run around in the real world, though no one else is as cute as Hudson Honey. Here are her siblings (or maybe they’re just friends; sorry, am somewhat ignorant of the specificities of that game’s universe) enjoying the sights and sounds of Sapporo, I’m guessing. Don’t know why I find them on the open sea so amusing…

BTW, you might be wondering whom that guy was, the one who was chasing Hudson Honey/Pink Bomber from before. Why it’s Kabuki Danjirou, star of Tengai Makyō, better known as Far East of Eden in the West. Here he is again, at some live event…

And finally, back to Hudson’s experiments with hardware; here we have a public showcase of Hi-Ten Bomberman, the 10-player version that ran in high definition and on proprietary hardware…

It never arrived home for reasons that aren’t very clear. PC-FX World states: “Hi-Ten Bomberman was a game that was originally planned to be released on the PC-FX, however due to NEC’s publishing guidelines, Hi-Ten would never be released for the unit.” As previously stated, I’m pretty clueless when it comes to Bomberman, so anyone with any insight regarding anything I’ve stated, please step on up!

Till then, I’ll be watching the Mr. B Bee music video for the 30th time.

When I tweeted last night’s post about my latest internet crush, I also asked for some Hudson Honey/Pink Bombergirl fan art. And naturally, as you can see above, Kyle Fewell delivered big time!

Next step: a Bomberman reboot starring Hudson Honey/Pink Bombergirl, done by Lab Zero (they should also hire Kyle; would love to see him and Mariel Cartwright work together).
