Will Every Copy of Super Mario 3D All-Stars Be Personalized As Well?

Naturally, I decided to go down the rabbit hole of game footage that was supposedly saved on VHS and which is also supposed to be spooky on the eve of Super Mario 3D All-Stars’s unveiling. A total coincidence, of course.

But instead of Super Mario 64, which is obviously at the heart of the “Every Copy Of Super Mario 64 Is Personalized” meme, my first real taste involved Super Mario Bros, largely because it’s what YouTube recommended for me…

And here’s one with Super Mario 64 proper; it’s a bit on the long side, but not only is the production top notch, essentially every single genre “staple” is included, like having the camera pointed at an old CRT…

You will no doubt find a variety of individuals on the platform who will claim to have a detailed history of the meme, but no one whom I usually trust to do a good job for such a thing, so this is simply my two cents here: I believe Greenio was the first to truly fleshed out the joke on YouTube, or at the very least, has done the best job of it. Here’s another one of his…

Actually, here we a “research” video, but this one tries to pretend it’s all for real. I think? This one comment pretty much says it best…

“Creepypasta 10 years ago: he kills the bullies and dips his face in acid then kills his family

Creepypasta now: P E N G U I N N”

Yet there’s also…

“Honestly i kinda like this new era of creepypasta.

edit: I take it back I’m sick of this wario shit”

Naturally I’m curious to see how the joke evolves, with the forthcoming HD remaster for the Switch and all. In the meanwhile, Sonic fans are here to help fill the gap? Some have attempted their own spin on the formula, and predictably their approach follows the same basic beats as before, yet they also stumble due to a total lack of subtlety.

Here’s an example from 4zy1, the best one of several IMHO, which all connect to form a narrative of sorts. It’s a very minor quibble, yet it’s all about the details; note the somewhat sloppy fake timestamp…

I would eventually discover a somewhat original approach, that being the “Sonic [1/2/CD/3/& Knuckles] Beta [or Secret] Anti-Piracy Message”

The highlight of that last video was the alt Sonic CD title screen music; this one sounds higher quality, despite it being a more recent upload, which is the REAL mystery as far as I’m concerned ($20 says that last statement just outed me a total Sonic noob). Oh, and it also works in the haunted Tails doll from Sonic R meme as well…

BTW/FYI: that last clip, as well as this one, got me wondering if footage of Sonic CD on VHS was the new format for vaporwave music videos, but that doesn’t appear to be the case (though I’d love to be proven wrong and see additional examples)…

And finally, one last video, this one involving Sonic 1; am mostly sharing because it has, without question, the best faked VHS effect I’ve seen anywhere thus far, regardless of Sonic or Mario…
