Not looking good on video
In the past, Video interviewing has been rightfully criticized for placing technological barriers between applicants and interviewers. Indeed, while video interviewing may work perfectly for some candidates, it puts others at a disadvantage if they don’t have the right equipment or internet connection. Basic user issues such as knowing the right way to position a webcam or to set up the lighting can ruin a candidate’s chances. These issues are often compounded by the length of the interview format, where candidates are asked to answer a series of questions while remaining focused and centred in front of the camera. It simply doesn’t feel natural.
An experience designed for the selfie age
While video interviewing has been working through these technical challenges, behaviors have changed. Today, nothing is more natural for millennials than recording a selfie and sending it to friends via one of the messaging app, whether it be Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat or Snapchat. More content gets shared on those messaging apps than on all social media platforms combined! Therefore, asking candidates to submit a video entry via Facebook Messenger, at the end of their digital interview, is very natural. While we’ve kept this optional for many interviews, more than half of the candidates have already gladly submitted it.
With this new video recording feature, recruitment continues to accelerate, as employers can get an even broader perspective on a candidate’s communication, language and interpersonal skills. For candidates, the chance to record videos anywhere and anytime ensures a lower degree of anxiety, which maximizes their chance to present their talent at its best.
