The Mission of August Enrichment
There are many companies and individual tutors that offer enrichment or proficiency services, the vast majority of which focus on mathematics or other STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). You may be familiar with at least one of the big ones, such as Sylvan or Kumon. Now let me be clear that I am not here to disparage the importance of STEM in the least. Those subjects are essential, but they are not all that is essential.
STEM subjects deal with the natural and material world, the objects of human consciousness and experience. The humanities deal with all that is intrinsically human, which includes our understanding and perception of reality itself, and everything that carries meaning. That includes history, philosophy, literature, languages, ethics, and religion, among other things. The mission of August Enrichment is to provide enrichment tutoring in all of those subjects within a North American (including Central America and the Caribbean) geographical context and through an historical disciplinary approach. Furthermore, while there will be some formal lecturing, the majority of lessons will be comprised of dialogue and the Socratic teaching.
I use the word “enrichment” to specify that the August Enrichment curriculum is not meant to fit the demands or structure of any other course or school curriculum. In other words, August Enrichment will not necessarily help you complete your English paper or study for your philosophy exam, although you will most likely find some intersection in topics covered.
At the very bottom of this post you will find the first “homework” material that I assign to my students before our first official lesson. This broadcast on “The Great Textbook War” of 1974 serves as both the starting and ending point of August Enrichment’s Unit 1 curriculum. That means that it is a topic we will build up and dissect over the course of the first unit.
