A book is always judged by the cover, it’s the moment you see the cover you decide if you want to pick the book from the shelf or not.
It’s no different with a podcast, podcast album covers are the first and probably the only visual connection that a podcast has to its listeners. And you have to make sure that it is as close to perfect as it can get for the people to notice you and start listening to you. It’s the hook you need to reel in your potential listeners.
The first thing you have to keep in mind is that it has to follow certain requirements, like having a resolution of minimum of 1400 X 1400 pixels to a maximum of 3000 x 3000 pixels, 72 dpi in jpeg or png format with a RGB color space.
Now, that we have the technical part covered, here are a few things to keep in mind when creating an album art. It is the face of your podcast so make sure it is well groomed.
The design of your podcast album should reflect the kind of content that you are making. Make sure your color matches the mood of the podcast. If the podcast is about space make sure it gives away the message or if its about travel then make sure it feels light and adventurous.
If you are making a podcast to promote your existing brand or business, the album art should have your logo branded on it.
There are certain things with respect to design to keep in mind when making the cover;
When making a podcast too many words can lead to making your cover look too confusing that might result in the listener to lose interest in listening to your podcast,try to keep it within 5 words.
In addition to that, also avoid funky and flashy fonts as they are too distracting and may give away a very bad image of the podcast. Avoid fonts like Arial, Comic sans and overused fonts like Helvetica.
If going for more than one font limit your use to a maximum of 2 types of fonts not more than that.
When designing the artwork, avoid the use of generic images such as mic headphones and transistors.
Once we are done till here make sure you test it out how the album art looks in the industry standard resolutions i.e 3000 X 3000 pixels for maximum and a minimum of 55 X 55 pixels
As the later one is the standard size in which your podcast will be visible on any platform.
Last but not the least, always re-purpose the album art, use these in your social media posts, websites, and your business cards, this will help in your branding and the consistency with the usage of your album art will make you more recognized.
