You have been working hard to create and get your Podcast online. Soon you figure out that listens to your podcast is not as much as you expected, if not you can still read along to increase it. Your podcast is not reaching the majority of platforms that have a larger audience.

Now how to solve this problem?

Podcast RSS feed is the solution to your problem. You can distribute your Podcast to multiple podcasting platforms using your Podcast RSS feed. Let’s get into the what, why, when, and how of Podcast RSS feeds.

What are RSS Feeds?

RSS stands for Really simple syndication or Rich site summary. It basically is a link providing links to a list of data attributes and corresponding information. Here is an example of such an RSS feed.

Looks more like a code, each element in this code represents different info and will have link content like audio, video or image.

Why do you need a Podcast RSS feed?

Almost all podcast directories like iTunes, Google Podcasts, Spotify, etc use RSS feeds to show podcasts on their platform. So if you have RSS feed of your podcast you can distribute your podcast to these platforms resulting in your podcasts being visible on these platforms.

So the new fans on these platforms can easily find you when they are looking for a podcast like yours. Although the end-user of these platforms might not be able to see your RSS Feed. They will just see content from your RSS feed that turns up on their podcasting platform of choice.

When to start distributing using the RSS feed?

As soon as you get the first episode of your podcast online you can start distributing it to podcasting platforms. Distributing your RSS feed to these platforms is a one-time thing.

When you update your podcast or say add another episode the RSS feed gets updated, all of these platforms start showing your new episode automatically and is available to your audience on these platforms.

How do I get RSS feed of my Podcast?

The hard way — You might choose to write your own RSS feed but it might not be a piece of cake for someone who doesn’t understand programming or coding. The ones taking the hard way of writing the RSS feed themselves here is an example of a valid RSS feed. Once you have written your RSS Feed and hosted it on some URL you may validate it using http://podba.se/validate/ .

The convenient way — If you are using some podcast hosting service then you may contact them to provide with the RSS feed of your podcast. Many hosting services also take care of distribution to other platforms so check for that too. Anyways if you find that your hosting provider doesn’t distribute to some or any other platform you can copy and save the RSS feed to distribute it manually. All the podcast directories have their own step by step guide on how to submit the RSS feed.
