Austin is home to many things: live music, the University of Texas, the state capital; but many people don’t realize Austin is also home to the nation’s largest urban bat community-and its right downtown. More than 1.5 million Mexican Free-Tail bats make their home under the beams of the Congress Avenue bridge.

The south congress avenue street bridge in downtown that crosses Lady Bird Lake is home to the world’s largest urban bat colony. People gather every night at sunset from spring to fall to watch the bats emerge and fly off into the sunset.

Austin bat watching tours are the best way to see the Brazilian free-tailed bats.
