Here’s a rundown of the February 18, 2020 episode of the Austin Anthem Podcast. You can subscribe to the podcast or listen directly through the media page on AustinAnthem.org.

New CBA Signed
On February 6, MLS and the MLSPA announced the signing of a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) to cover the next five years. The Athletic’s Sam Stejskal and Paul Tenorio covered in detail on Allocation Disorder and also behind the paywall at The Athletic. For the local perspective, check out this excellent article from Chris Bils.

Nashville SC Agreement
In what appears to be a win for all sides, the city of Nashville and MLS reached an agreement that will allow construction of a new stadium to begin immediately. In the deal, the club agrees to take on all the financial burden of construction.

Inter Miami Lawsuit and Qatar Sponsorship
Inter Miami was in the news a lot over the last week. The club lost the first round of its trademark battle vs. Inter Milan. The club also reportedly signed a major sponsorship deal with Qatar. The sponsorship is notable both because of its size, which dwarfs other MLS sponsorships, and the controversy surrounding a country that has a questionable human rights record.

New Austin FC Hires
Austin FC recently announced five new front office hires. Most notable to grackles are Kaitlin Swarts (VP of Community Engagement), who will continue to operate Upper Ninety as part of the club’s 4ATX Foundation, and Alfredo Naim (Community Marketing Manager).

Financials in Austin vs Columbus
A paywalled story in the Austin Business Journal covered several juicy tidbits about the different financial situation that the club finds itself in Austin as opposed to Columbus. A highlight:

“In Austin, Precourt sees a market poised to deliver at levels Columbus never approached. The St. David’s HealthCare deal, for instance, delivers more contractually obligated income than Columbus could count on from its stadium, training facility, jersey and suite deals combined.”

YETI: New Kit Sponsor
Austin FC announced that YETI would be the official jersey sponsor at an event on February 10, attended by Matthew McConaughey and others.

Natalie Czimskey Interview
Austin Anthem’s director of women’s engagement, came on to talk to us about her perspective on inclusive growth of the group. Previously, Natalie has shared her perspective with Austin Fit magazine and others.

Opening Kick at Oskar Blues
