Soccer Fans From Across Austin Join Together to Launch Austin Anthem

AUSTIN, Texas — Over 400 soccer fans joined together as a part of an overflow crowd at Jack & Ginger’s on Rock Rose on Saturday afternoon for the official brand launch for Austin Anthem. Austin Anthem, previously known as MLS in Austin, was founded in 2013 with a goal of bringing a Major League Soccer team to Austin. Attendees heard from members of the organizational team about the group’s new logo, colors, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and vision for the future. Austin City Council Member Jimmy Flannigan also spoke, encouraging supporters of the Austin soccer community to stay engaged in the civic process, and vote in the November elections.

The Austin Anthem logo features Austin’s iconic great-tailed grackle. The color scheme, which prominently features violet and turquoise, is representative of Austin’s status as a modern city with a retro feel. The colors pay homage to Austin’s history as the “City of the Violet Crown,” while also invoking visions of a beautiful Austin sunset and the many bars and live music venues around town that provide the soul of Austin.

“The grackle, loved by many and hated by most, is notorious for its loud song and unapologetic attitude,’ said Ryan Riggins, Director of Art and Brand for Austin Anthem. “The bird in our crest stands tall and proud, looking forward towards the things that lie ahead. One foot is firmly planted, representing the core values we hold to as a city and embody as a supporters group. The other foot is raised, ready to move forward in support of our club and stepping into a better, more unified Austin.”

In addition to seeing the new name and branding, the first 150 attendees received t-shirts with the Austin Anthem logo. Other merchandise from the group, and from Austin FC, were distributed to the crowd in attendance. More merchandise will be available in the near future.

Attendees also had the opportunity to sign up for various volunteer roles in the group. Austin Anthem will hold its next official organizational meeting on November 4 to formally adopt volunteer roles. The meeting will be followed by a MLS Cup Playoff watch party. More information will be available after the launch of the group’s new website at www.austinanthem.org.
