Virgin Australia this week has kicked off their newest international route: Sydney to Hong Kong. The daily service will run in direct competition with Qantas and Cathay Pacific.

This is Virgin Australia’s second route to Hong Kong, as the airline seeks to expand further into the Greater China market. The first non-stop flight launched a year ago from Melbourne to Hong Kong, operating 5 days a week, and soon to increase.

Travellers can also go beyond Hong Kong easily into China via Hong Kong Airlines and Hainan Airlines. The codeshare partnership with Virgin Atlantic enables further travel onto London and Europe.

The Sydney launch was a festive event, with political members and the airline management team surrounded by laterns, a few Chinese dragons, and of course; Dannii Minogue to lead the way.

“Virgin Australia is proud to bring more competition, value and choice to Australians with our new Sydney to Hong Kong daily service.” — John Borghetti, CEO.

Quick Facts:

  • The SYD <> HKG route is flying Virgins Airbus A330–200, offering 20 business class seats in a 1–2–2 config, and 255 seats in economy in a 2–4–2 config.
  • Virgin Australia now operated 12 return services weekly to Hong Kong, with daily flights from Sydney and 5 flights per week from Melbourne.
  • The onboard menu offers an asian twist in mind, with business class featuring beef wonton soup with Sichuan pepper, barbeque pork buns and more.
  • Asia travel is growing, with over six million passengers travelling between Australia and China last year, up 5.4 percent from previous.
