Wait!

What? You have written an OR and not AND in the title. Are you sure its correct?

Yes, it is! When stepping into the world of authorship, every writer is faced with a pivotal question: Do you aspire to see your name gracing the Amazon Best Seller list, or is your goal to sell a million copies of your book?

While both achievements signal success, they represent very different journeys in the literary landscape and should be a part of larger strategic goal rather than a short term one.

Also, while both the questions are relevant, we need to consciously ask — when do we exactly want them? Becoz timing is important. And most importantly, it is the sequence that matters.

Believe it or not, most newbie authors are disillusioned about it when they start out with their writing journey.

So, let me break this down for you.

The Allure of the Amazon Best Seller

First and foremost, the Amazon Bestseller tag is temporary and the euphoria might be fleeting; bestseller status is transient, changing hourly.

That does not mean being an Amazon Bestseller is not important. It definitely is!

What authors constantly fail to realize is that they cannot leave their own branding at the hands of a publishing platform alone. It’s not just ‘write it and forget’ it formula.

The key here is about mastering timing and leveraging the spike in recognition. Most authors fail to do that.

An Amazon Best Seller Badge acts as a powerful social proof, bolstering credibility and opening doors to speaking engagements, interviews, and enhanced networking opportunities.

So while you get the Amazon Bestseller Tag on your book, it is important that you also explore opportunities constantly, to leverage that achievement and build your author influence and brand.

Chasing the Million-Copy Dream

On the other side of this coin rests the long-term ambition of selling a million copies and making a million dollars in revenue.

When choosing that kind of a goal, you need to realize that your book has to be something that continues to impact people for years together.

For example — Rich Dad Poor Dad, Atomic Habits, Compound Effect, Think & Grow Rich etc.

If there’s one thing all these books have in common is that they have continued to influence people for years together.

They are like principles and concepts, tested on the anvil of time and experience, that have helped benefit and still continue to benefit their readers — on self growth, transformation, self-realization and success.

Reaching a million copies sold often requires a book to break through the noise of the market, achieving a universal appeal that transcends trends.

It’s about patience, consistent promotion, and oftentimes, the fortuitous blessing of virality or critical acclaim.

This milestone is a marathon, not a sprint.

Selling a million copies signifies a book has resonated deeply, causing ripples through word-of-mouth recommendations, book clubs, and maybe even adaptation into other mediums.

So, if you have this goal, its like creating a constantly flowing river, that will continue to quench the thirst of people for generations.

It’s beyond a bestseller where the real Secret of Success lies

Most people never make it to the last page of any book.

After reading 100s of them, let me break a secret code for you ( I am presuming right now, that not many have reached to this point, but if you did, you are awesome!)

Most non-fiction authors cross-promote their skills through their book.

The last page not only has the portfolio of books written by the author, it also has tons of other things the author is doing — seminars, workshops, community building, certifications, courses, podcasts, subscriptions, memberships.. the list is endless.

Here are few examples

  1. Think and Grow Rich Academy — Creating A Mastermind Alliance
  2. Ziglar Inc. — How to Achieve Massive Success in Sales
  3. Bob Burg Academy — The Go-Giver Way of Building Influence

The book written is not only about reaching a million people but also about creating a tribe that resonates with the book.

It is about tons of other places and opportunities where you can drive your potential readers that converts into a million dollar revenue.

Defining Your Success

To sum things up, when you are writing your book for success, this is how you can work things out for you.

  • Plan your book with a long-term vision of creating a tribe out of your readers. Remember. Bigger Tribe = More Influence.
  • The content needs to be strong, engaging and relatable to create impact and influence.
  • The Amazon Bestseller Tag is about leveraging reach and connections
  • Million Copies Sold is a long-term strategy that is combined with cross promotional activities.
  • Do not just write a book — Expand it into a life journey. And that’s how your book becomes a legacy.

If you reached this far.. let’s take our connection a step further..
