A Guide for Understanding your Energy Centers

If you’ve ever been given the advice to work on a particular chakra, and have no idea where to start — you are in the right place.

First mentioned in the Vedas, Chakras are ancient energy systems that are gaining mainstream popularity every day. To get you up to speed, I will focus on the 7 primary energy centers running from the tip of your tailbone to the crown of your head.

Root — Represented by the color red, located at the very tip of the tailbone, and associated with the earth element, the Root Chakra is the core of our personal identity, providing us with stability and is our source of connection/grounding to the earth.

Sacral — Located just below the belly button, in the pelvis, the Sacral Chakra is represented by the color orange and is associated with the water element. It is the home to sexuality and our pleasure center and serves as a creative source.

Solar Plexus — Home to our personal power, the Solar Plexus is associated with the fire element. It is the center of our confidence and self esteem, and is represented by the color yellow.

Heart — The Heart Chakra, or Heart Center, represented by the color green, is located in the middle of the chest just above the heart, and is associated with the air element. This is the gateway or bridge between the physical and etherial and the source of our love and compassion.

Throat — Represented by the color teal, and associated with the element space, the Throat Chakra is the source of our communication. It also connects us to our creative expression and the divine. Keeping this chakra balanced will assure clear and authentic expression and communication.

Third Eye — The home of your inner knowing, and window to seeing the unseen. The Third Eye Chakra (also known as the Brow Chakra) is represented by the color indigo. This chakra opens the mind to inner stillness and when nurtured will result in divine sight, intuition and high self-awareness.

Crown —Represented by the color violet, and placed at the very top of your head, is our highest energy center. The Crown Chakra is known as our enlightenment chakra as it is our portal to higher dimensions, and connects us with our spirituality and divine purpose.

Our chakras hold much power and potential. If blocked, or closed, physical or emotional symptoms may arise. If you are curious and want to explore your chakras you can explore them further through mediation, yoga, or breath work practices.
