Permission to Launch: Welcome to Authentik

It’s true, one is the loneliest number.

How many times have you come up with an idea, created a design, recorded a song — only to scrap it because it wasn’t right and the idea of shipping something less than stellar and absolutely perfect left you feeling completely nauseous?

If this is you, guess what? You. Are. Normal.

At least as a creative, you are normal. Quite normal, as a matter of fact.

Welcome to Authentik, a newsletter designed to help creatives build an honest brand. Each week I will share what I have learned as founder of StudioPress, creator of No Sidebar, and successful entrepreneur in the WordPress market.

This is me. This is my project. This is something I have dreamed of doing for a few years now, and for various reasons — some legit, and some not so legit — I had perpetually delayed the launch of this idea, this website, this movement, this chapter of my life.

There’s an adage out there, “ship now, fix later,” that needs to be executed far more than it ever is. The truth is, I think we all wait for the green light. The light that gives us permission to launch, permission to proceed with that “best idea ever” we came up with one night when everyone else was sleeping.

Here’s the thing: Nothing is perfect, and nothing will ever be perfect.

As easy as that is for me to say, and as much — at times — as I believe it to be true, I succumbed to fear and remained motionless for longer than I should have.

Well the answer is simple. I was afraid of starting something that might fail, or something that might be inadequately done. But one day I woke up and realized that fear was paralyzing me and holding me back from what I have to offer the creative world. It’s the one thing that can never be questioned or taken away:

My story.

How can anyone judge me on the one thing that is true to my soul? How can anyone say that my journey, the one that started as a project manager at an architectural firm and turned into a multi-million dollar company, is wrong?

Hint: They can’t.

Authentik is my story, my interpretation of being a creative, and my experiences of what I’ve done right, and what I’ve done wrong as an internet entrepreneur. And trust me, there’s a whole lot more of the latter for me to share with you.

So I will do just that, if you are willing to listen.

I love creating, and I love encouraging others to create. I love waking up and doing something that has never been done before — putting pixels where nobody has put them before, or saying something in way that has never been said.

To be unique. To be special. To be one-of-a-kind.

I want to stand out in the world, and I want you to stand out in the world too.

I want you to leave that boring job like I did, and pursue a career that is nothing short of life-altering and fulfilling. One that you wake up and love, one that you can’t go to bed because you don’t want your day to end.

Authentik will be a place where I share the ins and outs, the ups and downs, the good and bad of being a creative entrepreneur — and everything in between.

My fellow creatives, I leave you with this:

If you’re not embarrassed when you ship your first version, you waited too long. — Matt Mullenweg, Founder of WordPress

As I finish writing this, I am already starting to feel lighter. I look forward to proudly sharing my story with whoever is interested. Because it’s finally time.

A wise bee once said, “Scared out of my shorts, check.”

Am I embarrassed? Absolutely.

Permission to launch.
