In a world where the journey towards sobriety is often challenging and deeply personal, understanding the pathways and strategies for achieving and maintaining sobriety is crucial. This series aims to provide insight, encouragement, and practical advice for those who are on the road to recovery, as well as for their loved ones and support networks. As a part of this series, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Anisa Crespo.
Anisa Crespo, and passionately champion women’s empowerment through transformative coaching and storytelling. Guiding women towards fulfillment, She embody core values of faith, family, health, wealth, and freedom. After beginning her journey into sobriety and audaciously leaving my six-figure job at the same time, She aspire to help 1,000 moms become Mompreneurs by 2030, fostering a world where women embrace their potentia.
Thank you so much for joining us! Before we dive in, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your ‘backstory’?
After being in a male dominated industry for over 10 years I had a spiritual awakening and realized my true calling is helping women, so I left my 6 figure corporate job and that is what I do now! As a coach I help moms become mompreneurs by defining and funding their passions so they can create multiple streams of income while carrying out their purposes to live a prosperous and fulfilling life! I’m also a real estate investor, podcast host, published author, founding member of the Women’s Impact Network, but my two main roles are child of God and mother of twins.
Can you share with us the most interesting story from your career? Can you tell us what lessons or ‘takeaways’ you learned from that?
I am not sure how “interesting” this is, but it is certainly memorable with lessons and takeaways. Very early in my career, I was a server at a restaurant. It was my second job at the time. I had come from my 9–5 and was handling the busy dinner shift. I had a table of three older ladies. One ordered a salad, one ordered an appetizer, and one ordered a pasta dish, but they were all their “main courses”. The food runner, who was very young, still in high school, and new to the job, didn’t pay attention to the ticket and assumed that the salad should come first, then the appetizer, then the pasta dish, so the ladies received their food all at different times. Even though I was exhausted, and already had a very stressful day in another customer service position where the customers were not all very kind, I was still just as friendly as I always was, with a positive attitude because that is what is expected, and in my humble opinion, absolutely necessary in a service-based business. The ladies were very unpleasant to me and did not have the nicest things to say about my service. I accepted responsibility and empathetically apologized without placing blame, even though I knew this was not my fault. They complained extensively and left me a $1.00 tip, 100 pennies, which I had to split with the food runner.
I’ve heard many people say “I used to be in a position where I served people, but people ruined that for me.” I didn’t let that situation, or any of the other negative experiences I had in service positions cloud my view of the world. Instead, I believe that most people are good, with good intentions. I never treat my server poorly when I am out at a restaurant. Often times, things can go wrong and because they are front line they have to take the brunt of the madness, but more times than not, it’s completely out of their control. I’d like anyone who is reading this to take the time to have a little more grace, patience, and understanding with people. Things are not always what they seem and we don’t always know what someone is hiding behind a smile.
You are a successful individual. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?
Three character traits that were instrumental to my success are resilience, adaptability, and determination.
Resilience: There have been numerous challenges and setbacks along my journey, but my comebacks have always been 10X my setbacks. One particular instance was when I faced a major setback in my latest real estate project, specifically discovering foundation issues. Despite feeling discouraged, I persisted, learned from the experience, and eventually turned the setback into a valuable lesson that propelled me forward. When faced with the same situation again, I will be better prepared to handle it with knowledge and experience.
Adaptability: The ability to adapt to changing circumstances has been crucial in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of entrepreneurship. For example, when faced with unexpected changes in market trends, I quickly adjust my strategies and embrace new opportunities. This flexibility allows me to stay relevant and thrive in dynamic environments. Being able to pivot is absolutely critical. Keeping an open mind is essential in being adaptable as well. Understanding that making changes along the way to meet specific goals is a testament to flexibility.
Determination: Without steady determination, I would not have been able to overcome the obstacles that stood in the way of my goals. There were times when success seemed distant, but my determination kept me focused and motivated. One memorable instance was when I pursued a challenging real estate project that seemed daunting at first. Through sheer determination and perseverance, I not only completed the project successfully but also exceeded my own expectations. It was not an easy road to take, but the journey was well worth it. Feeling accomplished in the end encourages me to take on new challenges that I may not have considered before. No risk, no reward!
These character traits have been influential in my success, enabling me to navigate challenges, adapt to change, and persistently pursue my goals despite obstacles along the way.
Are you working on any exciting new projects now? How do you think that might help people?
I am working on several new projects! I have a new course launching called “Money, Empower, Respect”, where I guide women through a transition of becoming an entrepreneur through defining and funding their passions. I have several book projects I am working on with She Rises Studios. “Empower Her Story” is scheduled to release in a few weeks and is filled with stories of resilience, strength and triumph. I am transitioning into a new podcast going from host to co-host, with my business partner, Natosha. I’ve got a few other things brewing as well, but let’s leave something to be desired!
Ok, thank you for all that. Now let’s shift to the main focus of our interview. How would you advise individuals who are contemplating the journey to sobriety but might be hesitant or unsure about taking the first step? Are there key considerations or strategies that can make this initial phase more manageable?
For individuals contemplating the journey to sobriety, it’s essential to acknowledge that taking the first step can be terrifying. However, there are several key considerations and strategies to make this initial phase more manageable.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that sobriety is a journey, and progress takes time. Begin by taking it minute by minute and sometimes second by second, especially in the beginning when cravings and temptations may feel overwhelming. Focus on staying present and making small, manageable choices to resist the urge to drink or use substances.
Seeking support from friends, family, or support groups can provide invaluable encouragement and accountability. Surrounding yourself with people who understand and respect your journey can make the process feel less isolating and daunting.
Additionally, finding healthy coping mechanisms and distractions can help manage cravings and temptations. Engage in activities that bring you joy, such as exercise, hobbies, or spending time in nature. Developing new habits and routines can also provide structure and stability during the early stages of sobriety. I like to replace negative thoughts with positive actions.
It’s important to celebrate every small victory along the way, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Each moment of resistance builds resilience and reinforces your commitment to sobriety. Remember that progress is not linear, and setbacks are a natural part of the journey. Be kind to yourself and focus on moving forward, one day at a time.
As time passes and sobriety becomes more ingrained in your lifestyle, the focus shifts from minute by minute to one day at a time, then to weeks, months, and eventually, years. Embrace the journey and trust in your ability to navigate the challenges ahead. With patience, perseverance, and support, sobriety is achievable, leading to a lifetime of health, happiness, and fulfillment.
Sobriety often comes with its unique set of challenges. Can you share insights on how individuals can effectively navigate obstacles or triggers that may arise during their journey? Are there specific tools or support systems that you find particularly helpful in overcoming these challenges?
Navigating obstacles and triggers in the journey to sobriety requires self-awareness, coping strategies, and support systems. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is raise your hand and say I need help, but folks who have been in your shoes are there for you and genuinely want to help you. Identify triggers, avoid them, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and implement them, and surround yourself with a strong support network of friends, family, or support groups. Cultivate spirituality for comfort and guidance, and reach out to peers who understand your journey. Prioritize a healthy lifestyle and seek professional help if needed. With these tools and insights, individuals can effectively overcome challenges and maintain sobriety for a fulfilling and sustainable recovery.
Maintaining sobriety is a long-term commitment. From your experience, what are the essential factors that contribute to the sustained success of individuals on this journey? Are there lifestyle adjustments or mindset shifts that prove crucial for the ongoing pursuit of sobriety?
Maintaining sobriety definitely requires a long-term commitment and involves essential factors that contribute to sustained success. Firstly, establishing a supportive environment, including a strong support network of friends, family, or support groups, is crucial. Additionally, adopting healthy lifestyle adjustments such as prioritizing self-care, engaging in regular physical activity, and maintaining a balanced diet can significantly impact ongoing sobriety. Moreover, cultivating a resilient mindset and making mindset shifts, such as reframing challenges as opportunities for growth and staying focused on long-term goals, are vital. When cravings arise, it’s important to think it all the way through and remember why you started the journey to sobriety in the first place. Nothing good ever comes from poisoning our bodies. By incorporating these factors and mindset shifts, individuals can navigate the complexities of maintaining sobriety and achieve long-lasting success in their recovery journey.
Based on your research or experience, can you please share your “5 Things You Need To Begin, Navigate, & Sustain Sobriety”?

Are there online platforms, local groups, or initiatives that you recommend for fostering a sense of connection and understanding during this process?
Absolutely, there are indeed endless resources available both online and in-person to support individuals on their journey to sobriety. Here are some ways you can find and engage with supportive communities or resources that align with your specific needs and goals:
1. Online Platforms: Explore online platforms such as SoberGrid, In The Rooms, or Soberistas, which offer virtual support groups, forums, and chat rooms where individuals can connect with others in recovery from the comfort of their own homes.
2. Local Groups: Attend in-person support group meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), or SMART Recovery. These groups typically hold regular meetings in communities worldwide and provide a safe space for individuals to share their experiences, receive support, and learn from others who are on a similar journey. Zoom meetings are available around the clock.
3. Social Media: Join Facebook groups or follow Instagram accounts dedicated to sobriety and recovery. These online communities often share inspirational stories, tips for maintaining sobriety, and provide a platform for individuals to connect with others who understand their struggles.
4. Mobile Apps: Utilize free downloadable apps like Everything AA, Sober Time, Sober Grid, or I Am Sober, which offer features such as daily affirmations, progress tracking, and peer support networks to help individuals stay motivated and connected on their sobriety journey.
